Wen Ci’s expression was complex.
To be honest, she could understand the Jiang parents neglecting their biological daughter after raising another girl for twenty years. What she hated most in her heart were her adoptive parents. After swapping her out of a wealthy family to give their own daughter a better life, they had subjected her to all kinds of abuse.
Wen Ci’s eyes were extremely cold, and her fists clenched involuntarily. She was grateful this was the 1980s; otherwise, she would have personally killed the Wen parents.
…
The next day.
Huo Jingyuan returned with the computer.
He had originally planned to stay in Hangzhou a couple more days, but after receiving the assignment from the Northwest Military District, he wanted to return early to discuss it with Wen Ci.
Wen Yaozu was doing his daily exercises in the yard. Seeing his brother-in-law laden with bags, large and small, he immediately stepped forward to take some of the items. “Brother-in-law, you’re back!”
“Yes.”
Hearing the commotion downstairs, Wen Ci walked out into the courtyard, her brows furrowing tightly. “Didn’t you think to hire someone at the airport to help you carry these?” Huo Jingyuan was still recuperating from his injury. In the 1980s, computers were exceptionally heavy.
Even as she said this, Wen Ci walked over to Huo Jingyuan’s side to help share the load. “Next time you’re in this situation, hire someone to help. Don’t overexert yourself.”
Huo Jingyuan: “It’s not as serious as you make it sound.”
He felt his body had mostly recovered after this period of rest. The reason he accepted the position as Regimental Political Commissar in Northern Shaanxi was that he didn’t want to remain idle.
Wen Yaozu used all his strength to carefully move the items into the living room, his gaze occasionally drifting towards his sister and brother-in-law. Once brother-in-law returned, they would discuss his arrangements!
“Pour your brother-in-law a glass of water.”
Huo Jingyuan shook his head. “I’ll do it myself.”
But Wen Yaozu dashed off and quickly brought back a glass of water for his brother-in-law.
After drinking the water, Huo Jingyuan looked at Wen Yaozu and said unhurriedly, “People from the telecommunications company will come to install the computer this afternoon.”
“Leave him here alone?”
Huo Jingyuan nodded. “The family compound is different from other places; things won’t get lost. After we go to Northern Shaanxi, we can leave him some money to get meals from the canteen by himself.”
Wen Yaozu: “But… I don’t know how to use a computer!”
Huo Jingyuan asked, “What aspect do you want to learn?”
“I don’t know.”
Wen Ci licked her lips.
She actually knew a bit about computers. As for computer science majors, in the 1980s, only top universities like Tsinghua and Peking University had such departments. But even in their computer science departments, the number of usable computers was limited, and students had restricted access time each day.
Wen Ci didn’t expect Wen Yaozu to test into Tsinghua or Peking University. Just knowing a little would make his future life easier.
Wen Ci suggested, “We could hire a teacher from Tsinghua or Peking University to teach him.”
Peking University was only about seven or eight kilometers from the military family compound. Hiring a professor to teach Wen Yaozu in their spare time shouldn’t be too difficult.
“Tsinghua or Peking University!” Wen Yaozu’s eyes widened, and he muttered under his breath, “Isn’t that a bit much? Having a professor from there teach me?!”
Tsinghua and Peking University were the top institutions in countless people’s minds. Even a three-year-old knew their prestige.
“Besides hiring a professor, we don’t know anyone else with that expertise,” Wen Ci said.
Hearing this, Huo Jingyuan thought of someone proficient with computers. He looked at Wen Ci, then shook his head. “She knows how, but it’s a bit… inappropriate.”
“Why inappropriate?” Wen Ci asked, then added, “Who are you talking about?”
“Su Wanqing.”
Wen Ci: “…”
Su Wanqing had grown up abroad. She had access to computers from the moment they appeared and, due to her family background and education, was considered proficient.
