When Wen Ci heard the word “brother-in-law,” her gaze instinctively shifted to Wen Yaozu. Then she heard, “Sis, brother-in-law wants to talk to you.”
“Okay.”
Wen Ci walked over and sat down by the landline phone.
It had been less than eight hours since she parted from Huo Jingyuan, and she already missed him. She spoke calmly, “What did you need to talk about?”
“Wife, the Northwest Military District called me. They’re temporarily transferring me to Northern Shaanxi.”
“Ah?” Wen Ci frowned, her expression immediately turning more serious. “But your injury… isn’t it not fully healed yet?”
“They want me to serve as a Regimental Political Commissar for a year.”
“Political Commissar?!”
Wen Ci’s eyes widened. Although she wasn’t entirely clear on military ranks, she knew the difference between a Regiment Commander and a Regimental Political Commissar.
Wen Ci reined in her emotions and asked, “Why so sudden? Do they want you to go to Northern Shaanxi immediately, or after you’ve recovered?”
“The transfer is next week. They want me to go there and see if there are any promising recruits. Officially, it’s the Political Commissar position, but it’s more of a nominal posting. I won’t have to do intense training or heavy, exhausting work.”
“That’s good then.”
She had been worried that Huo Jingyuan wouldn’t adjust well to a full year of convalescence in the capital’s family compound. Being in the army, even as a Political Commissar, was different. Although it was a nominal post, it was still quite significant.
“Do you want me to accompany you as an army dependent?”
Huo Jingyuan answered honestly, “The superiors haven’t made it mandatory, but I am eligible to have my family accompany me. In my heart, I want you to come with me. Is that okay?”
“Of course, it is.”
As his wife, if she didn’t accompany him, who would? Besides, Northern Shaanxi wasn’t extremely far from the capital; it was just a day’s journey by train. She could still manage her business, just making day trips back to the capital when needed.
“What about your business?”
“I can still do it.”
The army doesn’t forbid spouses of officers from running businesses. In fact, once a business reaches a certain level, it’s even encouraged and supported.
Suddenly, Wen Ci noticed Wen Yaozu sitting obediently on the sofa, his face full of expectation. “Then what about Wen Yaozu? Should we take him with us?”
There was still one month left before the school summer break. If they wanted to take Wen Yaozu, they would need to get permission from the Wen parents back in their rural hometown.
“Isn’t the start of the school year still far off?”
“The key is we need his parents’ permission.”
Huo Jingyuan fell silent.
He knew about the hardships Wen Ci had suffered in her childhood. She definitely wouldn’t want to see the Wen parents again. However, for a minor like Wen Yaozu to travel, guardian permission was mandatory.
Wen Yaozu, listening nearby, immediately interjected, “I’ll go back and talk to Mom and Dad! They’ll definitely agree to let me spend the summer with you guys.”
“And what about Wen Yaozu learning computers?” Wen Ci asked.
As a temporarily transferred Regimental Political Commissar, the military district would assign temporary housing, but it would likely be much smaller than the family compound in the capital. Furthermore, since he would be transferred again after a year, installing the computer in the Northern Shaanxi family compound wasn’t feasible.
“Let’s discuss the details when I get back,” Huo Jingyuan said.
Wen Ci nodded. “Okay.”
She had been tired from the long night before. Even though she had slept a bit on the flight from Hangzhou, she still felt mentally exhausted. “Then I’ll wait for you at home.”
“Okay.”
Wen Ci hung up the phone.
Wen Yaozu quickly pressed, “Is brother-in-law being transferred somewhere? Can I live with you guys during the summer break? Mom and Dad will definitely agree! If they don’t, I’ll go on a hunger strike!”
Since he was little, going on a hunger strike had been his favorite tactic. No matter what he wanted, if they refused to buy it for him, he would refuse to eat. Usually, by the next day, he would get what he wanted.
