The sable’s fur wasn’t truly purple but carried a sheen that made it appear close to violet.
At this moment, the creature poked its head out cautiously. After ensuring there was no danger, it darted out, carrying a rabbit in its mouth, ready to flee.
Wolf One and Wolf Two’s eyes gleamed with excitement, and they were about to leap out when Song Wei held them back.
Still, the sable noticed the movement and immediately locked eyes with them.
Now fully exposed to the sable’s gaze, Song Wei and her group were spotted.
The little creature bared its tiny teeth and growled fiercely in their direction, its posture an amusing mix of cuteness and aggression.
It was clear the sable was scared, but it couldn’t bear to part with its hard-earned meal. So, despite its fear, it stood its ground.
Song Wei restrained the two wolves and the children, choosing not to act.
Though sable meat was edible, there was no shortage of wild game like rabbits and pheasants in the mountains. There was no need to hunt such a spirited little creature.
Moreover, some animals held spiritual significance in the beliefs of the locals. Song Wei had only learned later that creatures like snakes, weasels, and foxes were regarded as protective household spirits in ancient times.
She recalled having caught a snake once but had since refrained from taking such animals lightly.
Among them, the weasel was considered the most taboo, while others like the fox and sable were seen in a more neutral light.
Song Wei’s interest lay not in the sable but in the rabbit hole behind it. She wondered if there might be more rabbits inside.
After a brief standoff, the sable seemed to realize that Song Wei’s group posed no threat. Hesitating for a moment, it picked up the oversized rabbit and cautiously moved a few steps back.
It would walk a bit, then turn around to check on Song Wei.
Those round, gleaming eyes met Song Wei’s gaze for a moment before the sable darted away, disappearing into the undergrowth with its prize.
After it left, Song Wei continued holding back the wolves, her attention focused on the rabbit hole. She wanted to see if any other rabbits would emerge.
A few minutes later, a gray blur shot out of the hole.
“Wolf One, Wolf Two, go!”
The two wolves sprang into action, chasing after the rabbit.
This trip into the mountains wasn’t just for hunting-it was also an opportunity for Song Wei to train the wolves.
Thanks to their boldness, they had ventured deeper into the forest this time. After initial clumsiness, the wolves had grown proficient, ultimately catching three pheasants and two rabbits.
The wolves were immensely proud of their work. Wolf One carried a pheasant in its mouth, strutting like a seasoned general, chest puffed out with pride.
Song Wei held a rabbit, Heidan clutched another dead rabbit, and Shuanzi happily hugged a pheasant to his chest.
Before leaving the forest, Song Wei gathered all the game and packed it into her basket, letting the two little ones have their fun while they were still in the mountains.
As they exited the forest, they encountered a group of women foraging for wild vegetables.
“Wow! You caught a pheasant!”
Song Wei casually held a single pheasant in her hand while keeping the rest hidden under coverings in her basket.
The women couldn’t hide their envy.
“How does she do it? Song Zhiqing has such good luck and skills. Every time she goes into the mountains, she comes back with something great!”
Song Wei smiled modestly. “It’s thanks to my dogs. They helped catch this.”
Her comment drew shocked gasps.
Two sleek, well-fed dogs stood beside her, their muzzles still faintly stained with blood. The sight made her claim instantly credible.
“Your dogs can catch pheasants?”
The women were genuinely stunned, their gazes at the two dogs filled with newfound respect.
No wonder Song Zhiqing fed her dogs so well-they could catch pheasants!
Song Wei nodded. “Yes, these aren’t ordinary dogs. I think they’re mixed breeds-maybe a dog crossed with a mountain wolf. Don’t they look different from the usual dogs in the brigade?”
“You know, I thought so too! I’ve been wondering why they seemed so unique.”
“Wolf dogs, huh? You’re really lucky, Song Zhiqing. Wolf dogs are prized by hunters as hunting companions.
They’re naturals at tracking game!”
“They’re not even a year old, right? Catching pheasants at this age is remarkable. Imagine what they’ll be able to do when they’re fully grown!”
The women’s chatter turned into a lively discussion about the wolves’ potential.
Wolf One and Wolf Two seemed to understand they were being praised.
They raised their heads proudly, looking as dignified as little kings.
After exchanging a few words with the women, Song Wei began heading downhill.
As they approached the area near Su Fang’s in-laws’ home, they heard a series of blood-curdling screams from afar.
Song Wei’s instincts flared. She immediately scooped up Heidan and Shuanzi and sprinted toward the noise, the two wolves following closely behind.
“Su Fang, you shameless little tramp!”
The screeching voice belonged to old lady Luo.
“How dare you seduce your father-in-law, you brazen hussy!”
The shouting and the sounds of a physical altercation filled the air. Neighbors began gathering around the Luo family’s yard, their curiosity piqued.
“What’s going on? Sounds like a fight!”
Without hesitation, Song Wei charged forward and kicked open the courtyard gate. The wooden door splintered under her powerful kick, startling the onlookers.
Everyone craned their necks to see what was happening inside.
In the courtyard, Su Fang and old lady Luo were locked in a vicious struggle, pulling each other’s hair and rolling on the ground.
Su Fang’s eyes burned with fury as she sank her teeth into old lady Luo’s ear.
Thanks to her improved health and strength from eating well and exercising, Su Fang was no longer the passive victim she had once been. Old lady Luo couldn’t dominate her as she used to.
Old lady Luo howled in pain, raising her hand to slap Su Fang, but Su Fang’s strike landed first.
The courtyard echoed with old lady Luo’s wails.
Though Su Fang endured several slaps and kicks, she gritted her teeth, her eyes gleaming with determination.
“What are you two doing?” Song Wei feigned an attempt to break up the fight but subtly gave old lady Luo a push, allowing Su Fang to land a few more blows.
Finally, Su Fang broke free. Disheveled and wild-eyed, she suddenly darted into the woodshed and grabbed a knife.
Her bloodshot eyes locked onto one of the rooms. Step by step, she approached it.
Thud, thud.
The sound of her knife hacking at the door echoed through the yard.
Pinned down by Song Wei, old lady Luo screamed in rage, her voice dripping with venom.
“You wretched slut! What do you think you’re doing now? Still trying to seduce your father-in-law, you shameless hussy!”
Her words sent a wave of shock through the gathered crowd.
Song Wei slapped old lady Luo hard across the face, knocking her to the ground.
“Watch your mouth! You can’t just say whatever you please.”
Old lady Luo shrieked, “I saw it with my own eyes! This shameless woman was bathing in broad daylight, trying to seduce my husband!”
Meanwhile, Su Fang had broken down the door.
Inside the room, the sounds of smashing objects and a man’s frantic cries rang out.
Moments later, Old Man Luo stumbled out, his face pale with terror.
“What… what are you doing? This is against the law!”
Su Fang, her eyes blazing, replied coldly, “I’m going to kill you all! I’ll kill you and then end myself!”
Her words sent a chill through everyone present.
