“What does your divorce have to do with me?”
As the words fell, Su Wanqing seemed to understand something. She gazed at Wen Ci with a deep, scrutinizing look, carefully examining her appearance. Wen Ci had fair skin and was quite beautiful.
But as far as she knew, Huo Jingyuan’s wife was from Beijing.
When she worked at the hospital, she had never heard Wen Ci speak a single word of Beijing dialect. Moreover, Wen Ci didn’t seem like someone who grew up in a military family compound.
Instead, she seemed more like someone who grew up in the countryside.
“Are you lying to me?”
Wen Ci chuckled lightly, “Would lying to you earn me candy?”
Su Wanqing let go of Xue Li’s hand, her eyes flickering with a hint of emotion. She dropped her pitiful demeanor and looked directly at Wen Ci.
“Then I really should advise you to divorce Brother Huo.”
Wen Ci smiled, “You really have no shame.”
Su Wanqing spoke righteously, “It’s because you and Brother Huo have no feelings for each other. Your marriage was arranged. Now, the country advocates for free marriage.”
Wen Ci’s eyes curved into a smile, her expression carefree.
This Dr. Su, who had studied abroad, really had a naive way of thinking. Besides, what’s wrong with an arranged marriage? She was the one Huo Jingyuan was willing to marry.
Moreover, whether or not they had feelings for each other was another matter altogether.
Wen Ci slowly asked, “You said you were childhood sweethearts, but why have I never heard Jingyuan mention you?”
During the days on the green train, Huo Jingyuan had almost recounted his entire life story, but he never mentioned Su Wanqing.
He grew up in a military compound in Beijing and came to the northwest after reaching adulthood. Even in the Beijing compound, no one had ever mentioned a person named Su Wanqing.
“I… I…”
Wen Ci glanced at the clock on the wall. It was time for her shift change. She looked at Xue Li, her lips curling into a faint smile, her tone unusually calm, “When he finishes his meeting, help me ask who this childhood sweetheart is.”
After saying this, Wen Ci left gracefully.
Xue Li trembled slightly. For a moment, he felt as if he had seen an angry Huo Jingyuan, especially in that look and tone—it was as if they were carved from the same mold.
Though compared to Huo Jingyuan, there was a bit more of a smile on her face.
But that smile was a bit unsettling.
Xue Li unconsciously swallowed hard. His gaze swept over Su Wanqing, whose face had turned slightly pale, “Dr. Su, I’ll be going now.”
He recalled the order he received last week to pick up Su Wanqing.
At the time, he was curious why the promising overseas-returned Dr. Su would choose to come to the impoverished northwest military region. Now he understood.
She came for Huo Jingyuan!
When he returned to the military base, Xue Li only found the political commissar in the office. He urgently asked, “Where’s Brother Huo?”
“What’s the matter?”
“Something big, concerning Brother Huo’s future happiness.”
The political commissar frowned, “What’s the big deal?”
Xue Li recounted everything that had happened at the hospital in detail. The political commissar, Zhang Jia, was famously known as the emotional guru of the northwest military region.
Any family disputes could be resolved within half a day with his help.
As the political commissar listened to Xue Li’s detailed account, his brows furrowed. He rubbed his index finger back and forth on his eyebrow, speaking mysteriously, “It’s both tricky and not tricky.”
“Can Brother Huo make up with his wife?”
“With my help, definitely.”
…
Wen Ci had just stepped into the hospital’s changing room when she saw Yu Qing inside. Yu Qing spoke in a calm tone, “Wen Ci, it’s fortunate that the head nurse assigned you to me.”
The relationship between nurses and doctors is like that of comrades—they need to trust each other. If two people really can’t get along, it’s always the nurse who leaves.
Wen Ci’s eyes curved into a smile, “Mhm.”
Yu Qing suddenly thought of something, “So, was Dr. Su crying the night before last because she found out that the ‘Living King of Hell’ had gotten married?”
“Probably.”
