The cicadas chirped in the midst of summer, under the brilliant golden sunlight.
On her way back to the military compound family housing, Wen Ci saw slogans painted on the walls encouraging students for the college entrance exam. It was already June 10th; the exams would begin on July 7th next month.
Although many wouldn’t get into university, high school graduates were still highly valued. After graduation, jobs were assigned, and as long as one didn’t make mistakes or get dismissed, life could be quite comfortable.
After working for a certain number of years, the work unit would automatically assign housing.
There was no need to pay pension insurance premiums, and decades later, they would receive a retirement salary, often higher than what young workers earned, with excellent benefits.
Walking through the compound, Wen Ci noticed many family members wearing new clothes—summer short styles layered with jackets, all in fashionable designs.
Suddenly, a few young family members approached her and asked, “Comrade Jiang, do you have any more summer clothes for sale? My cousin just returned from the south and said the styles you’re selling are the newest and most fashionable.”
Hearing this, Wen Ci gently licked her lips.
She had promised to sell them for eight yuan today, and she had planned to rest at home in the afternoon. “How about this? Come find me tonight, and I’ll bring them for you.”
“Okay.”
Meanwhile, owners of clothing stalls in various wholesale markets had already keenly sensed the business opportunity. The newest and most fashionable styles were being sold at such low prices.
If they could find the supplier, their business could boom.
While they were searching for leads, Wen Ci had already returned to the courtyard.
In the courtyard, Huo Jingyuan lay on a recliner in the middle of the yard, a blanket draped over his head to block the sun. His shirt was off, and his wounds were wrapped in bandages. The white bandages were stained with traces of blood and medicine. Bathing in the sunlight would help his wounds heal faster.
Wen Ci tiptoed to the man’s side. Seeing no wounds on his waist and abdomen, his rugged, well-defined abs exuded a wild, hormonal aura just to look at.
The man’s broad shoulders and narrow waist made her want to touch them.
Wen Ci bent her neck, looking down at him, shielding him from some of the sunlight.
Lying on the recliner, Huo Jingyuan caught a faint, elusive fragrance—a scent unique to his wife. He gently raised his hand and accurately grasped Wen Ci’s slender wrist.
Wen Ci’s breath trembled slightly. The moment he held her wrist, it felt like a feather had brushed against her heart. The man lifted the blanket from his face.
Wen Ci blinked lightly. “How did you know it was me?”
“Your scent.”
The man’s voice was deep. Wen Ci looked closely and saw bite marks on his Adam’s apple—her handiwork from the night before last. She lowered her eyes. “You didn’t even cover it up.”
“Cover what?”
As he spoke, the man seemed to understand. He adjusted the recliner to sit up slightly. His bony, distinct fingers gently traced the bite marks, curling his lips in satisfaction.
“This is a mark my wife left on me. No need to cover it.”
Wen Ci rolled her eyes at him. “There are children at home.”
“Kids that small don’t understand a thing,” the man cursed roughly, but his magnetic voice made it sound very manly.
A excited voice suddenly interrupted the intimate moment between the two: “Sis, you’re back?”
Wen Ci broke free from the man’s grip and grabbed the blanket to cover his body. She wasn’t opposed to Wen Yaozu seeing Huo Jingyuan’s physique.
It was just that things had been a bit intense two nights ago.
Huo Jingyuan was injured and didn’t dare use too much strength.
So, she could only leave a few bite marks on his body.
Wen Ci didn’t answer the question, changing the subject instead. “How did your studying go today? If you finish the sixth-grade elementary school problems, I’ll treat you to the state-run restaurant tonight.”
