Marrying the Infertile Officer, Winning Effortlessly in the Seventies with a Pregnancy System Chapter 97: Indeed Pregnant, and with Twins, No Less

“What’s wrong? What if someone comes by?” Gu Jianing glanced around nervously. At this time and place, people could pass by at any moment.

In this era, even married couples couldn’t just casually hold hands, hug, or kiss in public—otherwise, they’d be accused of having “improper conduct.”

Sheng Zexi let out a defiant snort. “I’m not afraid,” he said, his tone bordering on arrogance.

Everyone knew Sheng Zexi was a troublemaker in the Northwest Military District. Anyone who tried to pick a fight with him would only be asking for trouble.

But the truth was, Sheng Zexi had just felt an inexplicable panic moments ago.

His attention had been entirely focused on Gu Jianing. He had noticed the complex emotions in her eyes—sorrow, confusion, bewilderment…

And then, for a fleeting moment, it had seemed as if she didn’t belong to this world at all, as if she might vanish like an immortal riding the wind.

At that instant, Sheng Zexi’s heart had clenched in fear, and without thinking, he had pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. Only by feeling her warmth against him could he reassure himself that she was truly here with him.

He couldn’t help but recall a dream he’d had not long ago—one where Jianing had refused his proposal and instead married that Wen Zhuqing.

When he had woken from that nightmare, Sheng Zexi had been so shaken that he had held Gu Jianing in his arms for a long time, the unease in his heart only slowly fading.

“Alright, let’s hurry to the auditorium. I want to sit closer to the front,” Gu Jianing said, patting his arm.

Reluctantly, Sheng Zexi released her, though he immediately took her hand again as they made their way to the auditorium.

Along the way, they ran into Zhang Shuwan and her family of three, as well as Jiang Baihe and Chai Jianguo. Soon, more and more people joined the flow toward the auditorium. The Northwest Military District, which had grown quiet due to the heavy snow blocking the mountains, now buzzed with life on this New Year’s Eve, thanks to the performance by the cultural troupe. It almost didn’t feel as cold anymore.

Gu Jianing glanced at Zhang Shuwan and Jiang Baihe, silently calculating the time.

It had been over a month since Jiang Baihe’s condition was cured by her, but she wasn’t sure if she had conceived yet.

As for Sister Shuwan…

The twin boys’ pill—Sister Shuwan had said she took it that very day. More than a month had passed since then.

She was probably already pregnant, though she might not know it herself yet.

“I’m going to talk to Sister Shuwan,” Gu Jianing said, making her way over to Zhang Shuwan.

The moment Zhang Shuwan saw her, her eyes lit up, and Guoguo immediately clung to her.

“Finally, your beloved Battalion Commander Sheng is willing to let you go,” Zhang Shuwan teased.

She had seen it—how Sheng Zexi had held Gu Jianing’s hand tightly, standing by her side like a guardian deity.

It was as if he wanted to keep her all to himself, leaving no room for anyone else to intrude.

Thinking of Sheng Zexi’s overwhelming possessiveness, Gu Jianing couldn’t help but laugh. “Sister Shuwan, stop teasing me. I came to ask you something.”

“What is it?”

Gu Jianing leaned in, while Lin Xing tactfully moved aside to chat with Sheng Zexi.

Gu Jianing lowered her voice. “Has your period come this month?”

Her period? Which one?

Zhang Shuwan was puzzled for a second before realization struck.

Right—how could she have forgotten? Her monthly cycle should have started a couple of days ago, but it still hadn’t come.

With all the preparations for the New Year, she had been so busy that it had slipped her mind entirely.

If Gu Jianing hadn’t brought it up now, who knew how long it would have taken her to remember?

Then she recalled the fertility pill Gu Jianing had given her, and the fact that her period still hadn’t arrived…

As someone who already had a child, Zhang Shuwan immediately understood what this meant.

Her heart pounded rapidly. “Jianing, you—you mean I might, might be…”

“I’d say it’s almost certain,” Gu Jianing replied, giving her what was essentially a 100% confirmation.

“Really?!” Zhang Shuwan nearly exclaimed aloud in excitement but managed to control herself.

“You can wait and see. In about half a month, you should be able to confirm it.” Gu Jianing didn’t suggest a blood test—after all, half a month wasn’t that long to wait.

Then, it suddenly occurred to her—her eyes had a scanning function.

Immediately, she focused on Zhang Shuwan and activated the scanner in her vision.

Soon, the results appeared.

Zhang Shuwan was indeed pregnant—and with twins, no less.

“Okay, Jianing, I understand. I’ll keep an eye on it. If it’s confirmed to be good news, I’ll let you know.”

“Alright.”

When Gu Jianing returned to Sheng Zexi’s side, Lin Xing walked over, picking up Guoguo. He glanced at his wife, who seemed slightly dazed yet excited, and asked, “What’s wrong? What did Comrade Gu say to you?”

Zhang Shuwan instinctively opened her mouth to speak but stopped herself upon seeing the crowd around them.

“I’ll tell you tonight when we get home. It’s good news.”

Lin Xing: “Alright then.”

Meanwhile, Gu Jianing used her scanner to check Jiang Baihe ahead of them. When she confirmed that Jiang Baihe was also pregnant, her happiness grew even more.

She hesitated over whether to inform Jiang Baihe but ultimately decided against it.

Some surprises were better discovered on one’s own—it made the joy even more intense.

Having someone else reveal it might lessen the excitement.

Soon, the group arrived at the auditorium.

Inside, rows of seats were arranged neatly. The first couple of rows were reserved for leadership, while the rest were open seating.

Since Gu Jianing wanted to sit closer to the front, Sheng Zexi chose seats in the fourth row—close enough without being directly in front of the leaders.

Zhang Shuwan quickly pulled her husband and Guoguo over to sit beside Gu Jianing and Sheng Zexi.

With only about ten minutes left before the performance began, more people streamed in steadily.

Gu Jianing had always been beautiful, but after the transformation from the “National Beauty Pill,” her features had become nearly flawless.

Tonight, she had dressed up carefully, and under the auditorium lights, she looked even more dazzling.

In the military district, if there was one thing in abundance, it was single soldiers.

The moment these young men caught sight of Gu Jianing, many of them froze in place, some even bumping into each other in their daze.

The single soldiers’ hearts raced wildly, their longing stirring—until they noticed the man beside the beauty: Sheng Zexi. Instantly, their budding hopes withered.

And when they learned that the stunning woman was Battalion Commander Sheng’s wife, their hearts shattered into pieces.

Sheng Zexi’s reputation in the Northwest Military District was well-known—infamous for being a troublemaker, sharp-tongued, and ruthless. Not to mention, he had been the top soldier for several consecutive years, his strength making him untouchable.

Now that this beauty was his wife, none of them dared entertain any foolish thoughts.
