“I have something for you…” Gu Jianing said.
Under Sheng Zexi’s puzzled gaze, Gu Jianing took out a box of contact lenses.
She leaned in and whispered into Sheng Zexi’s ear, explaining the function of these special contacts.
Sheng Zexi’s pupils dilated slightly, a faint excitement flickering in his eyes.
“Ningning, I understand,” Sheng Zexi said once Gu Jianing finished. He grasped her hand tightly. “If this thing really works as you say, its impact will be enormous.”
Even if it has a time limit.
Gu Jianing gave a soft “Mm.” After all, she had specifically picked it from the system store and exchanged it with her points.
“Let me put them on for you.”
“Okay.”
Truth be told, Sheng Zexi had never seen or used anything like this before and had no idea how to wear them.
Soon, with Sheng Zexi’s cooperation, Gu Jianing quickly fitted him with the special contacts.
Once they were in, Sheng Zexi didn’t notice any immediate difference.
Nor would outsiders be able to tell.
“Go ahead. I’ll stay home with Yueyue and wait for you to come back.”
“Mm.”
“Daddy, do your best!” Yueyue cheered for her father.
Before long, Sheng Zexi, along with Amber and her pups, followed Chen Han and his team as they quietly disappeared into the dimming twilight.
Their figures soon vanished into the encroaching darkness.
The reason for bringing Amber and her litter was to help track down Xingxing and Leiting.
They could pick up scents.
Of course, Chen Han’s team had also brought along other military dogs.
…
Meanwhile, Xingxing and Leiting had been trailing the man for quite some time.
As the sky grew darker, the man finally stopped and entered a particular house.
“Looks like this is their hideout,” Xingxing murmured.
He knew it was best not to go any further.
Getting discovered would be bad.
He was well aware that he was just a child and never overestimated his own abilities.
So, he understood that the best course of action now was to wait for Yueyue to inform their dad and for him to bring people to catch the bad guys.
Not long ago, through the twins’ telepathic connection, he had learned that Yueyue had already told their father everything.
And that Dad was on his way with reinforcements.
“Leiting, have you memorized this place and that man’s scent?” Xingxing asked.
Leiting nodded.
“Then let’s head back.”
But just as the boy and the dog turned to leave, two men emerged from the shadows, carrying bottles of liquor.
Almost instantly, their gazes locked onto Xingxing and Leiting.
“Kid, who are you? What are you doing here?” asked one of the men, a tall and lean figure, his tone deceptively gentle.
Yet, in that same moment, Leiting’s fur bristled slightly.
Because on these two men, he caught a faint trace of the bad man’s scent.
Which meant these two were accomplices.
Leiting desperately wanted to warn Xingxing but knew it wasn’t the right time.
Though the tall man’s voice was gentle, a closer look revealed narrowed eyes filled with scrutiny and a hint of ruthlessness.
Xingxing blinked, his expression a mix of innocence and wariness.
Then, with a fierce glare, he retorted, “Why should I tell you? Are you trying to kidnap me? Hmph, I won’t fall for it!”
“My home is nearby, and my dad’s a cop. If you dare try anything, he’ll arrest you!”
The two men exchanged a glance.
“Oh? Didn’t expect such a wary kid,” one remarked.
“You’ve got it wrong, kid. Uncle here isn’t a kidnapper,” the other said with a smile.
“Uncle just wanted to remind you—it’s late, and a child like you shouldn’t be wandering outside alone. If you really ran into bad people, it’d be trouble.”
Xingxing’s expression cleared as if he’d just realized something. “Oh, so Uncle is a good guy!”
“Yeah, Uncle, I get it now.”
Xingxing put on an easily fooled, agreeable demeanor.
“Well then, Uncle, I’m heading home.”
“Come on, doggy, let’s go home.”
Leiting obediently barked in response.
With that, Xingxing led Leiting forward, while the two men continued on their way.
They were moving in opposite directions.
The fading sunset stretched their shadows long across the ground.
As they passed each other, their silhouettes nearly overlapped.
Hidden under his sleeve, Xingxing’s small hand clenched slightly, damp with sweat.
Truthfully, if Leiting could smell it, then clever Xingxing had also noticed the men’s expressions.
He suspected these two were likely accomplices of that bad man.
He knew he stood no chance in a fight.
Even with Leiting, he wasn’t sure if they could win.
If the men were unarmed, maybe. But if they had weapons…
So Xingxing understood—his best bet was to leave first.
And things seemed to be going smoothly.
Their paths crossed, then began to separate—
But just then, Leiting suddenly saw one of the men’s shadows on the ground shift!
In that same instant, Leiting moved!
As he whirled around, he came face-to-face with the tall, lean man, who had abruptly turned back.
The man’s hand was already reaching viciously for Xingxing—clearly aiming to grab him.
His face was twisted into a ferocious snarl, eyes filled with malice.
Leiting leaped, his sharp claws raking across the man’s outstretched arm, shielding Xingxing just in time.
The claws left deep bloody gashes on the man’s hand.
Normally, Amber made sure her pups’ claws were kept blunt to avoid accidentally scratching Xingxing and Yueyue.
Otherwise, Leiting’s swipe might have stripped the flesh down to the bone.
Xingxing reacted immediately.
He realized—they still suspected him.
“Definitely a military dog!”
“This kid must be from the military district.”
“Such a smart child… Pity. Smart kids can’t be left alive.”
With that, they lunged again, trying to seize Xingxing.
Leiting pounced, engaging both men in a fierce struggle.
Leiting had inherited his mother Amber’s physical prowess.
Amber had been a military dog, and though his father’s identity was unknown, rumors said he was another formidable military hound.
With such strong genes, Leiting’s natural abilities were exceptional.
Plus, Gu Jianing had given them intelligence-boosting pills at birth.
And Sheng Zexi had trained them rigorously.
So Leiting was more than a match for two opponents.
In the blink of an eye, the men’s clothes were torn, their exposed skin covered in bloody scratches.
“Damn, a real military dog. Impressive.”
“Looks like we’ll need the knife after all.”
With that, one of them pulled a dagger from his chest.
