In just a few seconds, the scan results came out.
Sure enough, it was exactly as she had guessed.
It wasn’t Chun Xing who couldn’t conceive—it was Zhang Jianjun who was infertile.
Gu Jianing’s expression instantly darkened, even uglier than when Niu Cui had brought Zhang Qiumei to her door to make a scene.
She despised hypocritical men who used women as shields.
It was their own problem, yet they shifted the blame and responsibility onto women.
She remembered clearly how the military wives had described Niu Cui, that mother-in-law, bullying her former daughter-in-law into divorce and now hurling curses at Chun Xing, pressuring her over the inability to have children.
Gu Jianing’s gaze fell on a woman standing outside the door, peering in her direction while holding a little girl’s hand.
That must be Chun Xing.
Though she had only seen her from afar once, Gu Jianing recognized her immediately.
Chun Xing was probably still clueless, still blaming herself and feeling guilty for not being able to give Zhang Jianjun a child.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jianjun had hidden the truth.
What a hypocritical and shameless man!
Over here, Zhang Jianjun, who was being pulled aside by his mother to listen to her complaints, suddenly noticed the strange way Gu Jianing was looking at him.
He had no idea why, though.
Zhang Jianjun truly hadn’t known that his younger sister had taken a liking to Sheng Zexi—let alone that she had brought their mother to confront Sheng Zexi’s wife at her doorstep.
As for Gu Jianing’s background, he actually knew a thing or two.
After all, he had climbed to a fairly high position himself.
But since his family had never mentioned Sheng Zexi or his wife in front of him, he hadn’t brought it up either.
Who would’ve thought that this oversight would lead to his mother and sister causing such a scene?
The reason Zhang Jianjun had taken notice of Sheng Zexi and his wife in the first place was because of the house.
Initially, he had thought the house was his, only to find out it had been allocated to Sheng Zexi, who had been transferred to Huansha Island.
Resentful, he had dug into Sheng Zexi’s background.
And he had uncovered a few things.
For instance, Sheng Zexi had a father who was a high-ranking officer in the Beijing Military Region. His wife, Gu Jianing, was an exceptional doctor.
But that was all he managed to find out.
When he tried to dig deeper, his superiors caught wind of it and issued him a warning.
They told him that both Sheng Zexi and Gu Jianing were under special protection, and their information was not to be disclosed.
For investigating them without authorization, Zhang Jianjun even received a disciplinary mark.
From then on, he knew that the Sheng couple was not to be trifled with—they were beyond his reach.
Of course, Zhang Jianjun was jealous of Sheng Zexi.
Jealous of his powerful background, his high-ranking father, his capabilities. At ten years younger than him, Sheng Zexi had already risen to the same rank, with a future full of promise.
Jealous that Sheng Zexi had a wife as outstanding and beautiful as Gu Jianing, who had given him a pair of twins and was now pregnant again.
And what did he have?
Nothing.
Not even the ability to father a child!
But no matter how jealous or resentful he was, his rationality warned him not to provoke Sheng Zexi and his wife.
So whenever he ran into Sheng Zexi, he made sure to be polite.
Yet somehow, his mother and sister had been foolish enough to storm into Gu Jianing’s home and make a scene.
Zhang Jianjun was furious.
Were those two out of their minds?
Well, if Sheng Zexi had shown any interest in his younger sister, that would’ve been a different story.
He wouldn’t have minded having Sheng Zexi as a brother-in-law.
But the key point was, Sheng Zexi and his wife were said to be deeply in love. Rumor had it that every evening after dinner, the whole family would take a stroll together.
Moreover, Gu Jianing was so outstanding.
Anyone with eyes would choose Gu Jianing over Zhang Qiumei.
Zhang Jianjun knew he couldn’t let this escalate.
After a moment of thought, he immediately stepped forward with an apologetic smile. “Dr. Gu, I’m truly sorry.”
“My mother and sister were just spouting nonsense. Please don’t take it to heart.”
“Rest assured, I’ll discipline them properly when we get back.”
“I’ll make them apologize to you. You’re magnanimous—please don’t hold it against them.”
As he spoke, he urgently signaled Niu Cui and Zhang Qiumei with his eyes. “Hurry up, apologize to Dr. Gu.”
Niu Cui hadn’t expected this. Her son, whom she had always been so proud of—the pillar of her authority—was now demanding she apologize to some young girl.
This was too much for Niu Cui, who had always considered herself superior.
So, she stiffened her neck and refused to apologize.
As for Zhang Qiumei, she had thought her brother had come to stand up for her.
Instead, he was forcing her to apologize.
Already humiliated by Gu Jianing’s slap (metaphorical), the idea of apologizing made her feel even more disgraced.
Her pride wouldn’t allow it.
Meanwhile, Zhang Jianjun watched his stubbornly silent mother and sister, his anxiety skyrocketing.
Just then, a deep, magnetic voice came from outside.
“An apology won’t be necessary.”
“I’ve already reported this to the superiors.”
“They’ll send someone shortly to handle the matter. Let the leadership decide how to deal with it.”
“It’s Regiment Commander Sheng—he’s back!”
All eyes turned to the tall, imposing man who had just entered.
Indeed, the one who had rushed back was none other than Sheng Zexi.
Sheng Zexi had been in the middle of training when he heard that someone might be causing trouble at his home, harassing his wife.
Unable to sit still, he arranged a shift swap with a comrade and hurried back.
On the way, a friendly acquaintance filled him in on why Niu Cui and Zhang Qiumei had shown up at his doorstep.
Immediately, he detoured to the leadership office to report the incident before heading home.
“Brother Xi…”
Gu Jianing hadn’t expected Sheng Zexi to return at this moment.
Sheng Zexi stepped forward and took her hand. “Are you alright?”
Gu Jianing shook her head. “I’m fine.”
“What about the kids?”
“They’re asleep inside. The commotion didn’t wake them. Honestly, I could’ve handled this. You didn’t have to come—it must’ve interrupted your training.”
Sheng Zexi gently squeezed her fingers. “It’s fine. I just swapped shifts with a comrade. Nothing is more important than you and the children.”
Though the house was guarded by Amber and her litter—ensuring Gu Jianing and the kids were safe—he still couldn’t rest easy knowing his pregnant wife and their young children, Xingxing and Yueyue, might be at risk.
“Even though this wasn’t caused by me, it still stems from me in a way. It’s only right that I handle it.”
Gu Jianing: Fine, that’s a fair point.
After all, this “rotten peach blossom” Zhang Qiumei was only here because of this man’s ridiculously handsome face.
But Gu Jianing also knew it wasn’t Sheng Zexi’s fault.
Her husband was wonderful—too wonderful.
His excellence and good looks naturally attracted attention. That was just how it was.
When rotten peach blossoms sprouted, you just had to pluck them off.
