The two exchanged a glance, each seeing a bone-chilling dread in the other’s eyes.
The background prompt they’d received upon entering the instance, along with the clues they’d gathered at the Lin residence yesterday, had already made one thing clear: the Lin family’s eldest daughter had died at the Yu family’s hands.
The Fu family had warlords backing them, and yesterday the ones who’d come to the Lin residence to search and apply pressure had been precisely the warlords’ men.
It was all far too coincidental.
“The Yu Young Master, the Fu Young Miss…”
Lin Feng gritted his teeth, turning these two identities over and over in his mind.
He pieced together all the clues.
“A-Yu, I understand now.” Lin Feng clenched his fists tightly, his knuckles white with force. “It was Yu Huaiting and Fu Songcheng together who killed the Lin family’s eldest daughter.”
Chen Yu nodded. “The reason they could use the soul-guiding formation to trap me at the Yu residence is also because that’s where the Lin daughter met her end.”
The moment the words fell, the bustling crowd around the tea stall suddenly seemed to be parted by an invisible giant hand.
The uniform sound of military boots striking the ground approached from afar. A squad of armed military police surrounded the small tea stall so tightly not a drop could leak through.
The NPC’s voice was stiff: “Take him away.”
Lin Feng: !
Had Fu Songcheng and Yu Huaiting already obtained a story fragment and launched an attack?!
Alarm bells rang wildly in Lin Feng’s mind. He didn’t know what mistake he’d made and could only warily follow the NPCs’ movements.
As a ghost, Chen Yu anxiously followed along beside Lin Feng, but held back by the killing aura filling the courtyard of military police, he couldn’t get close to Lin Feng to share any of it for him.
All the way under escort, Lin Feng was roughly shoved through the vermilion gates of the Fu residence.
Crossing the courtyard, he was pinned dead onto the cold gray bricks of the main hall floor.
At the head of the main hall, Fu Songcheng sat upright in a grand chair.
“Lin Feng.”
Fu Songcheng lowered his eyes, casually skimming the foam off his tea with the cup lid. “First meeting—poor hospitality, do forgive me.”
Lin Feng, forced to kneel on the floor, raised his head and looked at him coldly. “Your hospitality is all too thorough.”
Fu Songcheng let out a soft laugh and set the teacup heavily on the table. “The banned books the Lin daughter read, and the reactionary rumors you’ve been spreading in secret—those are enough for the military government to have you shot ten times over.”
Fu Songcheng stood up and walked down the steps one by one, looking down at Lin Feng from above, his eyes carrying a victor’s contempt. “Moreover, you should never, under any circumstances, have disturbed my and Yu Huaiting’s wedding.”
“Get to it. Let’s see how hard this rebel’s bones are.”
At Fu Songcheng’s command, two strong military police stepped forward at once, hefting heavy military batons and bringing them down viciously on Lin Feng’s back and the backs of his knees.
“Mm—”
Lin Feng let out a muffled grunt. One strike, and half his body was wrapped in pain.
And at the same time, Chen Yu, standing helplessly to the side, erupted in a shrill, miserable scream.
[Damage Synchronization].
Every lover’s blessing was also a curse.
The heavy blow Lin Feng suffered transformed into a soul-tearing agony, fed back a hundred percent onto Chen Yu’s soul body.
Chen Yu curled up on the ground in pain, his semi-transparent body—already weakened from the soul-guiding—beginning to flicker violently.
“A-Yu!”
Lin Feng swallowed the blood in his mouth, gathering himself to counterattack.
He didn’t understand what pit he and Chen Yu had stepped into. They’d hidden themselves perfectly—why had the opposing players suddenly triggered such a thunderous attack?
He and Chen Yu had only gone out to gather information.
But the priority now was not letting Chen Yu get hurt.
And watching Lin Feng beaten bloody, feeling the agony of being slowly carved apart deep in his soul, Chen Yu let out a painful howl.
“Don’t touch him—!!!”
Accompanied by a roar that didn’t sound human, the temperature in the entire main hall plummeted.
A yin wind rose from flat ground, rattling the doors and windows.
Under everyone’s terrified gazes, Chen Yu’s gray-white soul body—previously visible only to Lin Feng—forcibly condensed into a physical form, fully manifesting before everyone’s eyes!
Pale skin, bloody tears dripping from the corners of his eyes, and the thick, roiling malevolent qi around his body made everyone present gasp. The hands holding their guns trembled involuntarily.
“A ghost… there’s a ghost!”
And amid the chaos, the only one eerily quiet was Yu Huaiting.
When Chen Yu’s figure clearly appeared in the center of the hall, Yu Huaiting seemed to have had all the bones drawn out of him. He stared dead at Chen Yu, his eyes instantly reddening.
His hand fell limply. His lips trembled, emitting a barely audible breath of sound: “A-Yu…”
Chen Yu had originally been prepared to fight to the point of having his soul scattered, just to tear these guards apart—but hearing that call, he froze.
Wait, buddy?
What are you yelling?
In his mind flashed the clues he and Lin Feng had found earlier—the Lin family’s eldest daughter had lived at the Yu residence for a time; she and the Yu Young Master had returned from studying abroad together…
A realization seemed to strike Chen Yu. He stared straight at Yu Huaiting. “Yu Huaiting, make them stop!”
Something changed.
Yu Huaiting, without a moment’s hesitation, suddenly drew his greatsword and aimed it at the two military police beating Lin Feng. “Get away!”
The military police were stunned by the sudden turn of events and looked warily toward Fu Songcheng, waiting for the Fu Young Miss’s orders.
Fu Songcheng’s brows snapped together, and he shouted sternly, “Yu Huaiting! Have you gone mad? He’s an opposing-faction player!”
Watching Yu Huaiting’s reaction, Chen Yu fully confirmed his relationship with Yu Huaiting.
The bloody tears on his face hadn’t dried, yet the corner of his mouth curved. “Yu Huaiting, restrain Fu Songcheng!”
Yu Huaiting’s body went rigid, a flicker of struggle crossing his eyes.
But when he met Chen Yu’s eyes full of resentment, he still obediently complied.
Like a tamed mad dog, he whipped around, strode to behind Fu Songcheng, locked an arm around Fu Songcheng’s neck, and pressed the cold gun barrel dead against Fu Songcheng’s temple.
“Don’t move.”
Yu Huaiting’s voice was terrifyingly hoarse, the veins on his forehead bulging, as if he were desperately enduring something.
The situation between the two sides reversed dramatically in an instant.
Though Fu Songcheng had a gun to his head, his eyes remained terrifyingly calm.
He didn’t even glance at Yu Huaiting behind him—he looked straight at Lin Feng on the floor and Chen Yu in midair.
“You think this means you’ve won?”
Fu Songcheng sneered. He tilted his head slightly toward the NPC military police. “The moment I’m hurt even a little, kill Lin Feng.”
As his words fell, the dozen military police around them had already reacted, drawing their bayonets and surrounding Lin Feng dead.
“You dare touch him, just try!”
Chen Yu flew into a rage. He turned and sternly ordered Yu Huaiting, “If Fu Songcheng makes any move, shoot him dead immediately!”
The air seemed to freeze.
Though Chen Yu had manifested, he had no ability to attack physically right now—he could only rely entirely on Yu Huaiting, who obeyed his commands.
And Lin Feng was surrounded by NPCs.
In the standoff, Lin Feng suddenly let out a low, soft hum.
“So that’s how it is…”
Lin Feng’s voice wasn’t loud, yet it clearly reached everyone’s ears. “A few measly little NPCs—who are you trying to scare?”
Before the words faded, Lin Feng’s eyes abruptly turned sharp as a falcon’s.
His previously limp body instantly erupted with terrifying force. He backhanded the wrist of the military policeman nearest him, snapping it with a crack!
Before anyone could react, Lin Feng had seized the bayonet. With one clean, crisp sweep, he drove back the several NPC military police closing in, blood splattering across the main hall’s gray bricks.
“A-Yu! Now!”
Lin Feng roared.
Chen Yu didn’t hesitate for a second, staring dead at Yu Huaiting. “Kill him! Yu Huaiting, I want you to kill him!”
Bang!
A deafening gunshot.
Fu Songcheng’s body jolted violently. His eyes widened slightly—as if he hadn’t even had time to use any life-saving item—and just like that, Yu Huaiting shot him through the temple.
