This eaglet truly lives up to its reputation as a bird of prey. When it was first born, it was tiny—so small it looked even smaller than a chick. But it’s a meat-eater, and as it grew, it ate more and more, causing its size to shoot up rapidly. By now, it has become an especially plump and large fluffy ball.
Perhaps because its down is too thick and abundant, its body appears about the size of a full-grown hen. Although it hasn’t yet molted, the growing eaglet is no longer content to stay in its basket. When it’s bored and not asleep, it often flutters its fluffy little wings and struggles out of the basket.
It still can’t fly, and its movements while walking on the ground are quite amusing—it looks just like a large ground-walking chicken. That said, the eaglet at this stage is genuinely good-looking: a fluffy, chubby ball that’s incredibly adorable.
Song Wei picked it up directly, and as her hand pressed against the eaglet’s body, it sank into a soft, downy hollow.
“Coo, coo—”
The eaglet was well-behaved, crouching in Song Wei’s arms and carefully retracting its sharp claws.
“Hungry? If you really fluttered into the fire and got your feathers burned, I can’t even imagine how ugly you’d look.”
Better to stay fluffy and cute than end up singed and sorry.
The eaglet cooed a few more times, opening its mouth as if asking to be fed.
Song Wei was the type to indulge the little one. Believing that eating more was a blessing, she handed the eaglet to Lin Zhen’s arms and went off to prepare some meat.
Lin Zhen, who had been about to stand up: “……”
Song Wei left quickly, leaving Lin Zhen somewhat helpless.
The eaglet was familiar with all three members of the household and was content to be held by any of them.
Hei Dan sped up his homework writing—he also wanted to hold the big fluffy ball.
Just then, the gate knocked. Hei Dan sensibly stood up.
“I’ll get the door.”
As the gate opened, two people walked in.
“Comrade Lin Zhen.”
Lin Zhen nodded. “Let’s talk inside.”
The newcomers were two public security officers disguised as educated youth.
They came primarily to discuss Zhao Yuyin’s situation.
“Zhao Yuyin has already told Widow Hu about the royal tomb. Although Widow Hu had some doubts, she believed it because there hasn’t been any progress so far. She contacted her superiors, and it’s estimated that they will soon go to explore the tomb. Comrade Lin Zhen, we are short-handed and unable to spare anyone at the moment. Could you please relay the message to our bureau chief? It’s time to set the plan in motion.”
They trusted Lin Zhen deeply. His background as a retired soldier was well-documented, and the public security bureau had obtained relevant information about him.
It was Lin Zhen and Educated Youth Song who discovered and reported Widow Hu’s spy identity, as well as the location of the royal tomb. He even participated in the plan to leverage Zhao Yuyin.
Lin Zhen nodded. “I’ll ride my bicycle to the city today to inform the bureau chief.”
This matter was beyond the jurisdiction of the county’s public security bureau. The comrades disguised as educated youth were all dispatched by the city’s bureau.
After expressing their thanks, the two left.
When Lin Zhen came out, Song Wei didn’t ask him any questions. She simply took the eaglet and began feeding it meat.
She only stopped when the eaglet clamped its beak shut, refusing to eat another bite.
The eaglet’s impressive size was largely thanks to Song Wei’s grandmotherly feeding style.
Lin Zhen briefly explained Zhao Yuyin’s situation to her.
“She’s moving too slowly. It took her so long to gain Widow Hu’s trust.”
“Can I go with you when you capture the spies? I really want to see how big that snake is.”
Lin Zhen replied, “I’ll ask the bureau chief tomorrow. Your combat skills are exceptional, so you’d definitely be a great help if you come along.”
Song Wei wasn’t insisting—she mainly wanted to see what the giant snake that even she perceived as a threat looked like.
She was also curious about how a royal tomb could make such a massive snake willingly stand guard.
Lin Zhen kept the matter in mind. Once Song Wei finished feeding the eaglet, he pushed his bicycle out.
Song Wei handed him a pair of wool gloves.
“It’s getting colder—looks like it might even snow. Wear these gloves.”
Lin Zhen’s smile was unstoppable. He took the gloves, put them on, and suddenly leaned in to kiss Song Wei on the cheek.
“I’m heading off now.”
His ears flushed red as he pedaled away swiftly on his bicycle.
Song Wei was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled at his almost flustered escape.
What was there to be shy about? It wasn’t like they’d never kissed before.
Such a big, tough guy, yet he still got shy so easily.
But it was kind of cute.
