When they saw her, Song Wei was still holding the snake’s tail and flashed them a bright, toothy grin.
“Today, we’re eating snake meat. It’s a huge one.”
Hasanmu & Yu Wei: “……”
They could see that.
At closer range, the sight of the snake left them even more stunned.
It was just… smashed to death like that?
Little boss seemed to hold a grudge, barking fiercely at the dead snake.
When they brought the snake back, Feng Tingxuan was outright terrified.
Lin Zhen was also surprised.
Afterward, everyone pitched in to clean and prepare the snake. There was quite a bit of meat—even after removing the innards and skin, there were still over twenty pounds left.
The snake’s gallbladder was tied up with grass and hung to dry—it could be sold for money.
The innards were fed to the two big dogs Yu Wei and Hasamu had brought.
With so much meat, one meal wouldn’t be enough to finish it. Together, they made snake meat flatbreads, snake soup, and even grilled snake skewers.
In the end, everyone ate until they were full.
“Thanks. When we get back, I’ll treat you to beef. Our family still hasn’t finished the beef allocated from the last brigade distribution.”
Song Wei nodded. “Sounds good!”
As long as it was food, she was happy.
After eating and resting for a while, Song Wei went to feed the Pallas’s cat family again.
This time, Lin Zhen and Hasanmu went with her.
Their main goal was to search for the wolf pack.
The Pallas’s cats were wary of Lin Zhen and Hasanmu’s unfamiliar scents, so the two men didn’t dare get too close.
Watching Song Wei approach the Pallas’s cats with a plump marmot, only for the feline family to not only tolerate her but actively seek her affection, Hasanmu’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“How is this possible? She’s actually accepted by Pallas’s cats—and a mother with kittens, no less!”
Animals on the grasslands were usually extremely cautious.
Lin Zhen, however, had some idea why. “Probably because she saved the mother cat from being killed.”
This time, Song Wei openly indulged in petting the kittens. She also checked on the mother cat’s condition.
Injured and unable to hunt, the mother had been relying on Song Wei’s offerings lately.
When Song Wei examined the wound on its leg, the cat remained remarkably calm.
Such a big, fluffy creature—she couldn’t resist giving it a stroke.
Though its fur was a bit messy, covered in loose, dirty strands.
She didn’t have a brush on her today, but she’d come back tomorrow to see if she could groom it properly.
Once the cats were happily eating, Song Wei left.
The three of them rode on horseback, searching for traces of the wolf pack. Hasanmu was endlessly curious about how Song Wei had tamed the Pallas’s cats and kept asking questions along the way.
Already talkative, he became even noisier.
Song Wei simply said, “Earlier, the mother cat was surrounded by a pack of dholes. I saved it, but it was injured. Since it couldn’t hunt, I started bringing pikas or marmots every day. After a while, we got familiar.”
Hasanmu exclaimed, “You’re amazing! I can’t even guarantee catching a marmot or pika every day.”
Pallas’s cats, being feline predators, didn’t pose much threat to their herds. Plus, they were fluffy and cute, so the herders quite liked them.
But spotting Pallas’s cats was usually difficult.
“The wolf pack came again last night.”
There were wolf tracks and droppings nearby, along with the sounds from the previous night. It was clear the pack had their sights set on this area.
If they weren’t careful, the herd could suffer losses, and people would be in danger too.
“Let’s have Duoji search first. He can track the wolves’ scent.”
Duoji was the dog he’d brought—a large, light-gray wolfhound, though its wolf ancestry was quite diluted.
At Hasanmu’s command, Duoji sniffed the wolf droppings, then dashed off in a specific direction.
Song Wei and the others immediately followed.
There was no denying that when it came to tracking scents, dogs were the true professionals—especially on such a vast grassland. If they had to search manually, who knew how long it would take?
The three of them rode their horses, trailing Duoji for nearly three kilometers before finally spotting traces of the wolf pack in a rocky, mountainous area.
Eventually, they dismounted and proceeded cautiously on foot.
“Found them. The wolves seem to be hunting.”
The three crouched on the hillside, the wind up here bitingly cold.
Luckily, neither Song Wei nor Lin Zhen suffered from altitude sickness.
All three pairs of eyes were fixed on the wolf pack several hundred meters away.
After their last encounter, the pack was down to sixteen strong wolves.
Right now, they were in the valley below, fighting a snow leopard over a bharal (blue sheep).
“It’s a snow leopard!”
Hasanmu’s voice trembled with excitement.
Fortunately, the distance was great enough that the animals didn’t hear.
“That snow leopard’s about to die.”
Not only had the wolves stolen the bharal, but they were also relentlessly pursuing the snow leopard.
Hasanmu asked, “What do we do now?”
Before his words fully settled, Song Wei and Lin Zhen were already charging down the slope with their daggers, moving in perfect sync.
Hasanmu: “!!!”
Wait—hold on! Are people from the outside always this fearless?!
The wolf pack quickly noticed Song Wei and Lin Zhen’s presence. The familiar scent, combined with fresh grievances, made them abandon the snow leopard and turn their aggression toward the two humans.
Song Wei leaped down from a slope, her dagger slicing cleanly through a wolf’s throat.
In the next instant, she arched backward to dodge a pouncing wolf, then used one hand against the ground to pivot and deliver a spinning kick that sent the wolf flying.
Lin Zhen was equally ruthless, targeting the wolves’ throats with precise, lethal strikes.
Hasanmu stood frozen in shock. These two were the real deal—no wonder they traveled together.
Not daring to take on so many wolves head-on, he opted for long-range attacks with his rifle.
The alpha wolf let out a mournful howl as more and more of its pack fell.
Song Wei locked eyes with it. “Sorry, but since it’s come down to you or us, I’m choosing you.”
Being stalked by a predator was never a pleasant feeling. If they didn’t eliminate the pack now, even if she was safe while present, her uncle would still be living here.
Since the wolves had already scouted her uncle’s grazing grounds, they would remember his scent.
If the pack wasn’t wiped out, her uncle would be in danger once she and Lin Zhen left.
Song Wei wasn’t about to leave such a lethal threat unchecked.
The numbers were uneven, but Song Wei had fought mutated beasts regularly in the apocalypse.
A single mutated wolf could be as large as a full-grown bull. Compared to those, dealing with these non-mutated wolves was almost effortless—even with the disadvantage in numbers.
By the end, Song Wei was drenched in blood, her fair face streaked with crimson.
Despite her petite frame, the sheer power she radiated was awe-inspiring. The chilling intensity in her eyes was enough to make anyone’s hair stand on end.
Hasanmu didn’t dare approach. The simple-minded young man gulped nervously.
This version of Song Wei was terrifying.
But he couldn’t deny it—like a poppy flower, she was lethally dangerous yet breathtakingly beautiful.
Lin Zhen, also covered in blood, sheathed his dagger and walked toward her.
“It’s done.”
Song Wei met his gaze. “Yeah.”
Lin Zhen reached out, his warm hand brushing against her cheek to wipe away the blood.
“Are you hurt?”
