“That’s can’t happen! My eldest grandson hasn’t been born yet.”
She wanted to find a midwife at home to deliver the baby, but after consulting a fortune teller, she was told the baby would definitely be a boy. To ensure her grandson was born safely, and after the daughter-in-law fainted in the field just before giving birth, she brought her to the hospital.
The old woman shot Song Wei a hateful glare but didn’t dare to cause any more trouble.
Song Wei smiled at her.
This made the old woman even angrier. She twisted her granddaughter’s arm beside her.
“You see your grandmother being bullied and you don’t even help. You’re all useless little girls, just a bunch of good-for-nothings…”
Though the old woman had stopped arguing with Song Wei, her words were full of insults, calling the girls things like “useless” and “ungrateful,” all disguised as indirect insults.
Song Wei’s approach was simple: as long as they didn’t directly bully her, she would ignore it.
It was a pity for the three girls. Even when their arms were twisted painfully, they said nothing, not daring to even move.
Song Wei furrowed her brow. Though she disliked the situation, as an outsider, she didn’t want to interfere.
“And you!” The old woman continued, “If this baby turns out to be another girl, just wait! You’ll see what happens, bah bah bah… Look at my broken mouth, this must be my eldest grandson, don’t scare my eldest grandson away.”
Song Wei rolled her eyes in response.
The heavily pregnant woman, trying to please her mother-in-law, smiled at her.
She gently rubbed her belly and spoke with certainty.
“Don’t worry, Mom. This pregnancy feels completely different from the last. It’s definitely a boy.”
Not paying attention to the family on the other bed, Song Wei filled her stomach and then went to ask the doctor about the situation.
Su Fang needed someone to take care of her, especially since the situation was urgent and she was the only woman who had come. She decided to stay behind and help for a while.
But when would she be able to leave? Staying in the hospital was so boring.
She also asked the doctor for some medicine. She didn’t need anything that could be found in the mountains, as she already had some of that.
After paying for the medicine, Song Wei left.
Su Fang looked at her anxiously. “I… I don’t have money right now.”
She felt guilty. “I’ve spent it all.”
To be precise, the money had been taken from her by that family, either by deceit or force.
When she first married, she still had some money. But after they had conned and threatened her until all her money was gone, they began to treat her even worse.
Song Wei said, “I’ll cover it for you.”
She sat down and asked, “How much did you have when you got married? What did you bring with you?”
Su Fang replied, “About Seventy yuan and some coupons, clothes, and other things.”
“Do you want to get back what belongs to you?”
Su Fang lowered her head. After a moment, she nodded faintly.
“I do.”
But she was also afraid to go back.
Song Wei said, “Then wait until you recover and we’ll go get it back.”
That evening, Song Jing brought dinner: wild boar meat and chicken soup. As they ate, he explained how the boars had come into the village because Su Fang’s husband, Luo Dajiang, had captured a piglet in the mountains and failed to cover his tracks.
Hearing this, Su Fang froze. Her husband’s actions had endangered her life.
“The wild boar meat has been distributed, and because you killed one of them, the brigade leader decided to give you a larger share.”
An entire boar leg and about twenty pounds of pork.
However, Song Jing didn’t tell Song Wei about the drama that occurred during the meat distribution.
He brought a bowl filled with meat, along with chicken and chicken soup.
The meal was quite rich, and eating it with cornbread and pancakes was absolutely delicious. It was evident that Lin Zhen had prepared the dishes.
Song Wei gave the chicken soup to Su Fang, along with some wild chicken (pheasant) meat.
The wild chicken was one that Song Wei had caught, and Lin Zhen had stewed it with ginseng roots—two of them were mixed into the chicken meat.
Su Fang looked at the aromatic chicken soup and meat, swallowing hard. “I… I’ll just have a little bit,” she murmured.
Since marrying into the Luo family, she had rarely had any meat.
Even during her pregnancy, her mother-in-law only allowed her two or three eggs a month.
“Drink it. There’s plenty. Lin Zhen prepared two servings. If you don’t take care of yourself now, your body will suffer in the long run,” Song Wei said.
As for the wild chicken, she could always catch more in the mountains.
In the end, Su Fang drank the soup.
Around the ward, the sound of people swallowing their saliva became audible, especially from the old woman and the pregnant woman nearby, whose hungry gazes were almost predatory.
However, with Song Jing still in the room, the old woman didn’t dare to act up.
Song Wei secretly rolled her eyes.
What’s the deal? Picking on the weak, huh? Do I look that easy to bully?
Irritated, Song Wei instinctively touched her face.
Do I really look like someone who’s easy to push around?
After sulking for a couple of seconds, Song Wei focused on enjoying her meal.
Her partner’s cooking skills were incredible—she was so lucky!
Meanwhile, the old woman sat with a sullen face, muttering under her breath.
No need to listen closely—it was clear she was grumbling unpleasant things. Still, she didn’t dare say anything outright.
Later that afternoon, the three little girls were taken home. Judging by the old woman’s remarks, it seemed they were sent back to do chores.
Since Su Fang needed at least two more days of rest in the hospital, and the ward was crowded, Song Jing, being a man, didn’t feel comfortable staying overnight.
After the two women finished their meal, he cleaned up the bowls and left.
But as soon as he stepped out, the old woman started her snide remarks.
“Educated youth really live such easy lives—eating so much without a care! But their morals? Oh, those are lacking. No respect for the elderly or the young at all.”
She had clearly been watching earlier and there was so much meat but not a single bit was left.
It had made her so jealous that, if Song Jing hadn’t been there, she might have lunged forward to grab some herself.
