Marrying the Infertile Officer, Winning Effortlessly in the Seventies with a Pregnancy System Chapter 389: “She’s Just a Liar!”

Wen Zhuqing had thought that after saying all this, Gu Jianing would surely compromise.

But he was wrong.

Gu Jianing’s expression remained cold. “Everything you’ve said sounds utterly absurd to me, Comrade Wen. It seems you might be suffering from a mental disorder.”

“Please leave now.”

As she spoke, Gu Jianing was already searching through her system’s store.

Though she didn’t know why Wen Zhuqing had regained memories of his past life and come to confront her, since he dared to show up—and even threaten her like this—she couldn’t let him leave so easily.

Moreover, Wen Zhuqing was a stubborn man.

If she didn’t crush him completely this time, she feared he would retaliate even more fiercely.

Whether it was her children, her family, or her husband, they were all her vulnerabilities. She couldn’t afford to be soft-hearted.

Soon, Gu Jianing found the “One Month of Misfortune” skill in the system’s store and cast it on Wen Zhuqing.

If there had been a longer-lasting option, she would have chosen that instead.

Then, she noticed something particularly interesting.

The “You Are Mentally Ill” skill?

[You Are Mentally Ill” skill: When cast on someone, the person will gradually develop genuine mental illness symptoms over a week, eventually descending into full-blown madness. Note: Because this is a harmful skill, purchasing it will consume karma points.]

Gu Jianing read the note and asked the system:

“How much karma do I have right now?”

[Host, you have a considerable amount of karma.]

Gu Jianing: That made sense. Over the years as a doctor, she had saved countless lives—it would be strange if her karma wasn’t substantial.

“Can I afford this skill, then?”

[Yes, you could even buy a hundred of them if you wanted.]

Gu Jianing: A hundred wouldn’t be necessary. One would suffice.

Now that Wen Zhuqing had dreamed of his past life and was convinced she had too, and since she refused to yield to his threats, she feared he might try to drag her down with him.

If he went around shouting that she also had memories of their past life, she didn’t want to be seized and treated like a lab rat.

So…

The best solution was to make Wen Zhuqing a lunatic, a certified madman.

That way, even if she defied him and he ranted about her, any subsequent tests would only prove that Wen Zhuqing had lost his mind.

And who would believe the ravings of a madman?

Having made up her mind, Gu Jianing didn’t hesitate. She immediately purchased the skill and cast it on Wen Zhuqing.

At that moment, her heart settled completely.

Meanwhile, Wen Zhuqing hadn’t expected that even after laying everything out, Gu Jianing would still refuse to admit anything or help him.

“Fine, fine. Gu Jianing, since you’re so heartless, don’t blame me for being ruthless.”

“What are you planning to do to my wife, huh? Do you think I’m dead?”

The moment Wen Zhuqing uttered his threat, an icy voice cut in from behind him.

Hearing that familiar voice, Gu Jianing looked up.

Sheng Zexi was walking in.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Brother Xi… was back?

When had he returned?

How much had he heard of her conversation with Wen Zhuqing?

Gu Jianing’s hands trembled slightly.

For the first time in a long while, she felt afraid.

Even though she knew that in their past life, Sheng Zexi had remained unmarried because of her, and even though she knew that despite everything she had gone through, he had still rushed into a blazing fire to save her…

But now, facing Sheng Zexi, Gu Jianing still felt a pang of fear.

She couldn’t help but wonder—if Sheng Zexi also had memories of their past life, would his feelings for her remain as unwavering as they were now?

Would he think that in this life, she had schemed to trap him?

Would he… look at her with disgust?

There was no denying it—love could truly bring a person to their knees.

Gu Jianing had to admit that she had long since fallen helplessly in love with Sheng Zexi.

And so, she was afraid. Afraid that Sheng Zexi might look at her with disdain, or worse—with indifference.

So when Sheng Zexi stepped toward her and reached out, Gu Jianing instinctively took a step back.

She was scared.

Unexpectedly, Sheng Zexi paused at her reaction, then strode forward resolutely and grasped her hand tightly—as if to say, No matter what, I won’t let you run away.

Gu Jianing looked down at her hand, now enveloped in his larger, warmer one. The chill in her fingers slowly melted away.

“Don’t overthink things,” Sheng Zexi murmured softly, stroking her hair.

Then, shielding her behind him, he turned to face Wen Zhuqing.

“Wen Zhuqing, would you like to repeat what you just said?”

“What exactly are you planning to do to my wife?”

Wen Zhuqing hadn’t expected Sheng Zexi to return so abruptly.

Faced with such an imposing presence, Wen Zhuqing instinctively shrank back. But convinced of his past-life memories, he refused to back down.

He met Sheng Zexi’s gaze, his tone laced with mockery. “Officer Sheng, I doubt you realize just how much your beloved wife has been hiding from you.”

“Do you really trust her that much?”

“She’s nothing but a liar!”

Sheng Zexi’s expression didn’t waver in the slightest.

He stepped forward, looming over Wen Zhuqing with absolute certainty. “I know exactly what kind of person my wife is. I don’t need an outsider to tell me.”

“Chen Ma, please escort Comrade Wen out!” Sheng Zexi called sharply.

Chen Ma hurried in at once, ready to usher Wen Zhuqing out.

Wen Zhuqing glanced between Sheng Zexi and Gu Jianing, then sneered, “Fine, I’ll leave.”

“I hope you won’t regret this one day.”

“But if you ever want to know the truth, you know where to find me!”

Wen Zhuqing wasn’t opposed to switching his target of cooperation to Sheng Zexi.

After all, Sheng Zexi now held a high position. If he were willing, the help he could provide would far exceed what Gu Jianing could offer.

Soon, Wen Zhuqing was gone.

The living room was now empty except for Sheng Zexi and Gu Jianing.

Sheng Zexi turned to Gu Jianing, about to speak—

But she flinched away like a startled animal, retreating straight to her room.

Sheng Zexi followed without hesitation.

When he entered, he found her sitting by the window, staring outside, lost in thought.

Gently, he placed his hands on her shoulders.

“Ningning, we’re husband and wife. Whatever’s on your mind, don’t keep it bottled up. If we talk it out, nothing is too big to handle.”

Gu Jianing’s fingers trembled slightly.

Nothing is too big to handle?

A trace of uncertainty flickered in her eyes.

The room fell into silence.

After what felt like an eternity, Gu Jianing finally spoke, her voice quiet.

“How much… did you hear of my conversation with Wen Zhuqing?”
