Gu Jianing nodded. So that’s how it was.
“Let’s go home. We’ll have guests visiting today,” Grandma Sang said mysteriously.
Gu Jianing: ? What guests?
But Gu Jianing didn’t ask further and simply followed Grandma Sang, along with Xingxing and Yueyue, back home.
On the way, Xingxing and Yueyue told her about Fang Wanrong’s attempt to abduct them.
However, the two little ones didn’t explain it very thoroughly, so Grandma Sang filled in the gaps.
It was only then that Gu Jianing learned that her so-called cheap father-in-law had actually been willing to call the police and have Fang Wanrong arrested.
Did Sheng Xinhao care more about Xingxing and Yueyue than Fang Wanrong?
Gu Jianing couldn’t fathom Sheng Xinhao’s thoughts, but in any case, Fang Wanrong had been arrested and could no longer harm her children. That was a good thing.
Along the way, Xingxing and Yueyue chattered nonstop about their lives over the past two months at the Sang family.
Of course, Yueyue did most of the talking, while Xingxing spoke less.
Soon, they arrived back at the Sang residence.
That afternoon, Gu Jianing finally saw the guest Grandma Sang had mentioned.
“Master!”
Gu Jianing stared at the newcomer in stunned silence for a moment before exclaiming, “Xiao Tian, is that you?”
“It’s me, Master!”
That’s right—the guest Grandma Sang had mentioned was none other than Qin Tian.
Thinking back, ever since Qin Tian had left with his parents for the capital,
Gu Jianing and Qin Tian had kept in touch through phone calls and letters, but they hadn’t seen each other in person.
Now, they were finally reunited.
Nearly two years apart had brought significant changes to Qin Tian.
He had grown much taller, his frame had filled out, and his features had sharpened. Now, he was a handsome young boy.
“How did you know I was here?” Gu Jianing asked.
Actually, Gu Jianing had planned to contact Qin Tian after finishing the exam questions.
After all, he was her only disciple.
Since she was in the capital, she wanted to seize the opportunity to meet him.
Unexpectedly, Qin Tian had come to her first.
“My parents told me. They heard from Grandpa Sang that you’d come to the capital to work on the college entrance exam questions.”
“Oh, so that’s how it was.”
So, for the past two days, it wasn’t just Xingxing and Yueyue waiting for Gu Jianing—Qin Tian had been waiting too.
“Brother Qin Tian~”
When Yueyue saw Qin Tian, she barreled into his arms like a little firecracker.
Qin Tian caught her in a hug.
Then he hugged Xingxing as well.
Only then did Gu Jianing realize that Qin Tian had already met Xingxing and Yueyue during these two months.
Although Xingxing and Yueyue had been very young when Qin Tian left, their memories were sharp, so they had always remembered him and missed him dearly.
The three of them had been waiting together for Gu Jianing to return.
After exchanging pleasantries, Gu Jianing pulled Qin Tian aside to test his medical knowledge over the past two years.
As soon as the examination began, Qin Tian’s expression turned serious and focused.
He answered every one of Gu Jianing’s questions earnestly.
The results proved that Qin Tian had a natural talent for medicine. Over the past two years, even though Gu Jianing hadn’t been there to teach him in person, he had diligently studied and learned from the books she had given him.
At the very least, he had memorized all the knowledge—now, he just needed practical experience.
“Xiao Tian, you’ve learned very well.”
Receiving Gu Jianing’s praise made Qin Tian very happy.
“I’ll probably stay in the capital for a while longer. During this time, come to the Sang family whenever you’re free, and I’ll teach you more.”
“Okay.” Qin Tian immediately agreed.
That day, Qin Tian stayed at the Sang residence until after dinner, when someone sent by Qin Zhihong came to pick him up.
Meanwhile, Gu Jianing finally found time to call Sheng Zexi.
Over the phone, the man’s voice was filled with longing.
It had been over two months since he had last seen or heard his wife.
How could he not miss her?
Even though there had been that dream.
But dreams were nothing like reality.
“Ningning, when are you coming back?”
“It’ll probably be a while yet.”
The reason for this was that the director of the capital’s hospital had invited Gu Jianing to give a lecture there.
Unable to refuse, Gu Jianing had agreed.
So, she would be staying in the capital a bit longer—to give the lecture and to take the opportunity to teach Qin Tian.
“Alright…” The man’s voice on the other end of the line noticeably deflated.
Gu Jianing spent a good while coaxing him before his spirits lifted slightly.
Back on Huansha Island, after hanging up the phone, Sheng Zexi’s frown lingered as he walked back.
After some thought, he headed to his superior’s office.
He still wanted to try and see if he could get leave to go to the capital and pick up Ningning and the two children. He wasn’t comfortable with his pregnant wife traveling back alone with two kids.
Of course, the most important reason was that he missed his wife, as well as his son and daughter.
Gu Jianing had no idea about Sheng Zexi’s plans.
At that moment, she was fastening necklaces with a single light blue bead around Xingxing and Yueyue’s necks.
“This is a bead that everyone in our family has. You must wear it properly—don’t take it off, and don’t give it to anyone else, understand?”
Having completed her task of setting the college entrance exam questions, the system had rewarded her.
The rewards were five Water-Avoiding Beads and one Fire-Avoiding Bead.
Since there were more Water-Avoiding Beads, Gu Jianing gave one to each of the children—the light blue beads now hanging around their necks.
She would wear one herself, too.
Of course, Sheng Zexi would also get a Water-Avoiding Bead, but not just that—he’d receive the Fire-Avoiding Bead as well.
Considering that Sheng Zexi often went out on missions and could encounter dangerous situations,
he needed life-saving items more than anyone.
So, Gu Jianing planned to give him both the Water-Avoiding Bead and the Fire-Avoiding Bead the next time they met.
“Mom, we understand.” Xingxing and Yueyue obediently agreed.
Though they were young, they knew that anything their mother gave them was something precious.
And if it was precious, they had to keep it safe, not let others know about it, and take good care of it.
After the college entrance exams ended, while the examinees anxiously awaited their results, Gu Jianing had already entered the capital’s hospital to begin her lecture.
It was less of a lecture and more of a teaching session.
Much of the medical knowledge Gu Jianing shared greatly benefited the doctors at the capital’s hospital.
The director of the hospital looked at Gu Jianing with fervent admiration.
Dr. Gu was truly remarkable. If only such a talented doctor could stay in the capital.
However, he had already asked.
At least for the next year, it was unlikely.
Because Gu Jianing would be accompanying her husband to his military post on the island.
Whether Dr. Gu could work at the capital’s hospital depended on whether her husband could be transferred to the capital.
Though it wasn’t possible for now, the director could only hold onto hope in his heart.
During this time, while Gu Jianing gave lectures at the capital’s hospital, she also brought Qin Tian along.
On one hand, it was to train Qin Tian; on the other, it was to let everyone know that Qin Tian was her disciple.
