Yu Huaiting had no interest in these documents whatsoever.
He leaned listlessly against the chair back, tossing a piece of metal he’d pried off from somewhere, his gaze drifting between Fu Songcheng’s profile and the newcomers outside the one-way glass.
With a soft click, the training room door was pushed open again.
Chen Ke had been standing by, ready at any moment. Hearing the sound, he immediately went to greet them.
The arrivals were none other than Lin Feng and Chen Yu.
Yu Huaiting’s tossing motion halted. The metal piece traced an arc through the air and fell to the floor with a clatter.
Yu Huaiting straightened up, his previously lazy gaze instantly turning aggressive.
He stared dead at the two who’d just entered, his tongue pressing against his back teeth, letting out an extremely grating cold laugh.
“Low mountains and foul waters—meeting one’s enemy…”
Before the words faded, the broad blade of Yu Huaiting’s greatsword refracted cold killing intent under the training room’s lights.
Without a single superfluous word, his whole body shot out like an arrow loosed from a string. The greatsword, wrapped in terrifying wind pressure, came down mercilessly at the top of Lin Feng’s head!
Lin Feng’s pupils dilated.
He hadn’t expected a sudden attack in Dawn at all.
The instant the greatsword fell, Lin Feng’s body twisted in place.
Boom!
The greatsword slammed viciously where Lin Feng had been standing.
The floor was split open with a crack, debris flying everywhere.
Lin Feng’s figure re-coalesced beside Chen Yu three meters away. Lifelong Partners could teleport to each other’s side.
“Yu Huaiting?” Lin Feng truly hadn’t expected to see him here. His long saber immediately flipped out, entering a defensive stance.
Yu Huaiting ignored him completely.
The strike missed, so he dragged his greatsword forward and pressed in again without hesitation.
Chen Ke, frightened out of his composure by the sudden turn, quickly distanced himself from the two, and only after confirming he was safe did he start trying to break up the fight.
“Stop fighting! Mr. Yu, they’re on our side! All on our side!”
“Lin Feng and Chen Yu are also high-level players we invited to enter the instance together! Let’s talk this out!”
Yu Huaiting turned a deaf ear to Chen Ke.
The greatsword swept horizontally again, forcing Lin Feng to use his skill to dodge once more. Seeing he couldn’t stop Yu Huaiting, Chen Ke could only turn to Fu Songcheng for help.
“Mr. Fu, please rein in Mr. Yu! Damage to the training room will cost points to repair!”
Fu Songcheng remained seated on the sofa, not even changing his posture. Unhurriedly, he turned a page of the file in his hand, his gaze calmly fixed on the text, as if he hadn’t heard Chen Ke’s plea at all.
He looked at the sky, at the ground, at the file, at the glass—just not at Chen Ke.
Fu Songcheng knew perfectly well why Yu Huaiting had gone mad—in fact, he himself wasn’t happy about it either.
He and Yu Huaiting had won the instance, yet became Bitter Couple; the ultimate beneficiaries were Lin Feng and Chen Yu—and they’d just happened to run into them at Dawn.
What was this?
It should count as these two deliberately coming to get beaten.
Let Yu Huaiting deal with them.
Outside the one-way glass, the eight newcomers who’d been undergoing tactical training had stopped too. Not only were they unafraid, they all crowded to the glass.
Watching the number one on the Power Ranking chase two other high-level players around the room with a greatsword.
Someone in the crowd even let out a collective gasp: “Whoa—”
Lin Feng was driven into utter wretchedness by Yu Huaiting.
His and Chen Yu’s teleport had a cooldown—they couldn’t use it endlessly.
Yu Huaiting wasn’t just terrifyingly strong; his speed and combat instincts were frighteningly keen. He was like a tireless beast, biting down on Lin Feng and never letting go.
Chen Yu tried to help from the side, but his skills leaned toward control and support. Before Yu Huaiting, he could barely find a chance to intervene and could only dodge miserably alongside Lin Feng.
Lin Feng dodged another heavy slash and happened to flee to Fu Songcheng’s side, about to use the terrain to widen the distance—when his foot suddenly caught.
It was Fu Songcheng, who’d swiftly extended a leg to trip him.
Lin Feng lost balance and staggered forward two steps.
Yu Huaiting’s greatsword, with the force of thunder, swept straight at Lin Feng’s chest!
Lin Feng couldn’t dodge and could only cross his arms before his chest, taking it head-on. Unable to steady himself, he staggered back and was caught by Chen Yu.
Only then did Fu Songcheng set down the file in his hand, tilt his head slightly, and look at the three darting about the room, calling softly to Yu Huaiting.
“Huaiting, come back.”
Yu Huaiting answered “Oh,” put away his greatsword, and sat back down beside Fu Songcheng with a grin.
“The big picture comes first.”
Fu Songcheng put on a show of scolding him in a low voice.
Lin Feng panted heavily, his forehead covered in sweat.
He lowered his numb arms and glared hard at Chen Ke, grinding his teeth as he complained: “You only said it was an escort mission before—you didn’t say it was with these two!”
Seeing they’d finished fighting, Chen Ke finally dared to step forward. “Mr. Lin, calm down. More people make the work easier—there are quite a few newcomers to protect, and the instance difficulty is high. We contacted many players on the rankings; there really were no other suitable candidates.”
Chen Yu also steadied his breathing. He reached out and tugged Lin Feng’s arm, then turned to Fu Songcheng and Yu Huaiting. “You two, calm down. Back in the instance, there were some misunderstandings.”
“Misunderstandings?”
Yu Huaiting couldn’t help but summon his greatsword again.
“We clearly won, yet at the final settlement the system judged the ‘Lifelong Partners’ identity to you two. You call that a misunderstanding? Then if I accidentally hack you to death today, that’s a misunderstanding too!”
Seeing Yu Huaiting about to flare up again, Fu Songcheng reached out and pressed down on his arm.
“Forget it, Huaiting.” Fu Songcheng’s voice was calm. He looked at Lin Feng and Chen Yu, his gaze deep.
The settlement result of the A Thought of Old Dreams instance—rather than saying Lin Feng and Chen Yu were favored by the system, it was more that the system deliberately disgusted him and Yu Huaiting, stripping them of their reward.
These two were, at most, just lucky enough to pick up a leak when the system used them to disgust him and Yu Huaiting.
“Can’t blame them entirely.”
Fu Songcheng said flatly and looked away from the two.
Seeing Fu Songcheng relent, Chen Ke’s hanging heart finally dropped back into his stomach.
He hurried forward to smooth things over, directing the staff to clean up the mess on the floor while bringing chairs for Lin Feng and Chen Yu to sit.
“It’s like this, Mr. Fu, Mr. Lin.” Chen Ke stood between the two groups, earnestly explaining. “There are eight newcomers to protect this time, and their skills are all very special and important. To ensure nothing goes wrong, we arranged for you to escort them together.”
Chen Ke sighed. “We’ve been actively contacting other top players on the rankings. Mr. Lin and Mr. Chen responded very positively.”
Yu Huaiting let out a cold humph through his nose, clearly still angry—but since Fu Songcheng had spoken, he was prepared to let these two off for now at Dawn.
Wait until we get out, then keep fighting.
