With He Yuan’s reassurance, Ji Shuyu naturally didn’t press further.
“Since we’re asking Second Sister-in-Law to help, we can’t let her efforts go unrewarded. We should show our appreciation properly.”
He Yuan nodded, his hands still gently massaging her slightly swollen feet—a common discomfort during pregnancy. Though her baby bump had only recently begun to show, he treated it with utmost seriousness, wishing he could bear all her hardships for her.
All he wanted was for his Shuyu to be at ease, as comfortable as possible.
That night, the two lay side by side in their new home.
Though the surroundings were unfamiliar, the presence of each other filled the space with a soothing sense of security. Unlike the noise and constraints of the He family compound, this small world belonged solely to them—and to the new life growing within her.
“Shuyu, I’m sorry this is the best I can offer you for now. But I promise you, one day we’ll live in a better house and have a better life.”
He Yuan’s voice was low and earnest in the darkness.
Ji Shuyu turned to face him, her hand gently stroking his cheek, a soft smile playing on her lips.
“I believe you. But a good life is something we build together—it’s not just your responsibility. I’ll work hard too, to make our little home better and better.”
Since fate had placed her in this era as Ji Shuyu, she was determined not to waste this second chance at life.
She would live it to the fullest, right here.
Moved, He Yuan held her even tighter.
The next day, after He Yuan arrived at the military base, he shared the news of their housewarming gathering with a few close comrades and colleagues.
Everyone cheerfully agreed to attend, saying they wouldn’t miss the chance to share in the couple’s joy.
Naturally, the news also reached Lin Feifei.
When she heard that He Yuan had not only been assigned a house but was also hosting a lively housewarming party, she was consumed with jealousy—so much so that it clouded her judgment.
While she was tormented day and night by that anonymous letter, terrified her past would be exposed, they were thriving, basking in their happiness?
She was almost certain that the accusation letter was connected to Ji Shuyu.
But how could she possibly have learned about what happened before Lin Feifei came to the island?
Her mind was in turmoil, a whirlwind of emotions threatening to drive her mad.
Ji Shuyu, sensing the timing was right, did not hesitate.
She found different stationery and envelopes, altered her handwriting, and copied out the report materials detailing how Lin Feifei had once acted out of jealousy during an audition for a lead role.
The materials described how Lin Feifei deliberately spilled water, causing a competitor to fall and injure herself, ultimately ending her stage career.
Ji Shuyu made several copies and mailed them separately to key leaders of the cultural troupe.
This time, Lin Feifei was powerless to intercept the letters.
As the accusation letters were sent out, a storm began to brew.
The long-buried incident was suddenly brought to light, quickly sparking an uproar.
While competition was common, such malicious actions that caused harm and ruined futures crossed a clear line.
The cultural troupe’s leadership took the matter seriously and immediately summoned Lin Feifei for multiple stern conversations to verify the facts.
Lin Feifei, who had still been secretly plotting ways to cause trouble for Ji Shuyu, was completely caught off guard by the sudden turn of events.
Faced with solid evidence and spreading rumors, she found herself trapped and defenseless, plunged into unprecedented disgrace.
Ji Shuyu couldn’t care less about what happened to Lin Feifei.
She had brought this upon herself. If she were truly innocent, Ji Shuyu wouldn’t have been able to dig up so much on her.
That day, as Ji Shuyu was returning from the supply and marketing cooperative—having just discussed a new batch of goods with Director Wang—she planned to send him samples in a few days.
On her way back, Lin Feifei intercepted her.
“Ji Shuyu, was it you who reported me?”
Lin Feifei’s eyes were bloodshot, and she looked utterly disheveled, a far cry from the polished beauty she once was.
“Oh, you mean those anonymous letters?” Ji Shuyu responded, immediately understanding. “Yes, it was me.”
Lin Feifei hadn’t expected Ji Shuyu to admit it so readily. She tried to step forward but stumbled over a stone underfoot.
Staggering a few steps, she glared at Ji Shuyu and demanded, “Why? Why did you report me?!”
“Why? That’s a ridiculous question. You’ve overstepped your bounds with me—did you really think I’d keep indulging you?”
“Why don’t you ask yourself? Coveting another woman’s husband—have you no shame?”
Ji Shuyu raised an eyebrow, looking at the woman before her who seemed on the verge of madness, her tone laced with cold mockery.
“Lin Feifei, did you really think everyone else was a fool?”
Asking her why? Did Lin Feifei expect her to just stand there and take it?
“I didn’t!” Lin Feifei screamed in denial. “I only admired He Yuan! It’s you who’s narrow-minded and can’t stand anyone getting close to him!”
“Admired?” Ji Shuyu let out a scornful laugh, taking half a step forward to look down at her.
“Your way of ‘admiring’ him was to throw yourself at him and make sure everyone knew how much you ‘admired’ my husband, right?”
A small crowd had begun to gather around them. Some recognized Lin Feifei as a member of the cultural troupe and couldn’t help but whisper among themselves.
“So it’s her? I heard she was reported for playing dirty tricks against a colleague…”
“She looks so refined—who would’ve thought she could be so vicious…”
The murmurs made Lin Feifei’s face turn pale.
She jerked her head up, her eyes filled with venom as she stared at Ji Shuyu.
“It’s all your fault! All of it! If you hadn’t married He Yuan, everything would’ve been mine! I should’ve had a smooth-sailing career in the cultural troupe! You’re the one who ruined everything for me!”
As she spoke, she suddenly lunged madly at Ji Shuyu, trying to claw at her clothes.
Ji Shuyu had been prepared. She instinctively stepped back, one hand firmly supporting her lower abdomen.
Her stun gun was fully charged and ready. She pressed it against Lin Feifei, delivering a sharp shock.
Lin Feifei’s limbs went numb, and she could no longer move.
Just then, a large hand shot out and firmly seized Lin Feifei’s wrist.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
He Yuan’s voice was icy. He had just returned from the military base and spotted a crowd gathered in the distance. As he drew closer, he saw Lin Feifei harassing Ji Shuyu, and his face instantly darkened.
Lin Feifei winced in pain from his grip. When she looked up and saw He Yuan shielding Ji Shuyu, tears welled in her eyes.
“He Yuan, look at her! She framed me, reported me, and now she’s twisting the truth!”
“Teach her a lesson?” He Yuan’s eyes were cold as he released Lin Feifei’s hand.
She fell to the ground, listening to his icy words.
“I think you’re the one who’s sick. Me, teaching my wife a lesson? I warned you before to stay away from us, but you didn’t listen. Now you’re facing the consequences of your own actions, and you still have the nerve to make a scene here?”
“I didn’t… I really didn’t…”
Lin Feifei’s voice grew weaker as she saw the undisguised disgust in He Yuan’s eyes. She finally realized that, in this man’s heart, she had always been nothing but an annoying nuisance.
At that moment, two cadres from the cultural troupe hurried over. Seeing the situation, they quickly stepped forward. “Comrade Lin Feifei, the troupe has been looking for you. Come back with us now.”
