A faint, imperceptible smile touched Wen Ci’s lips. It was just as she had suspected. The woman was eager to get them off the train first; once they reached a secluded place, they would be controlled.
Immediately, she blinked at the train police officer in the carriage. Beijing, as the capital, had the highest security level. The trains even had landline phones capable of communicating with the station platform.
Amidst the sea of people, several undercover police officers were already positioned.
Ahua pouted. The reason she wanted to come to Beijing to work was also to see the magnificent square. Frowning, she said, “The job isn’t that urgent. I just want to go to the square.”
A trace of malice flashed in the middle-aged woman’s eyes, but she couldn’t show it too obviously. She coaxed, “Alright, alright, alright. We’ll do as you say. I’ll take you to the square tonight.”
“Yay!”
The train had come to a stop, and the doors were open. Ahua, carrying a large backpack, and the middle-aged woman got off. The green-skinned train station had only one exit.
Suddenly, the middle-aged woman seemed to sense something. She warily scanned her surroundings. People like her were risking their necks; they had to flee at the slightest sign of trouble.
The middle-aged woman stopped, turned to look at Ahua and Wen Ci, her face wrinkling into a frown, her expression unusually tense. “Are you two up to something?!”
There were clearly plainclothes police officers in the crowd.
Ahua asked, confused, “Up to what?”
No sooner had she spoken than the middle-aged woman’s gaze fell on Wen Ci. “It’s you!”
“What about me?” Wen Ci pretended to know nothing.
This kind of trafficking operation involving women was certainly done with accomplices, so Wen Ci wanted to seize the chance to catch her partners. These criminals were brazen, daring to operate even in the capital.
“Let’s go!” the middle-aged woman suddenly shouted.
The inexplicable shout startled many passengers on the platform into a panic. The plainclothes officers could no longer wait; they had to step forward and restrain the middle-aged woman.
Wen Ci’s brow furrowed slightly. Is her vigilance really this high?
She’d rather sacrifice herself than implicate others.
The minor incident on the train concluded there. Wen Ci handed Ahua over to the police for handling. She herself needed to focus on the shipment of clothes she had brought back from the South.
Xu Jinghe had been thorough. He had arranged for a truck to wait for her at the station entrance and had rented a warehouse for her in the suburbs to use for storage.
Wen Ci asked about the warehouse cost.
She was told the price was five hundred yuan per month. Even for a partial month, the full monthly rent was charged. Exceeding by even a day required paying the full five hundred yuan.
Wen Ci’s eyelids lowered slightly.
This batch of clothes had to be sold within a month.
Otherwise,she would lose money.
Meanwhile…
Huo Jingyuan paced back and forth in his hospital room. He had been bored to death these past few days. The frustrating part was that his wife was on a train and couldn’t be reached by phone.
He estimated that Wen Ci should arrive in Beijing today.
He looked up at the clock on the wall, then walked straight out of his room. His deep, ink-like eyes settled on the doctors in the office. “Lend me the landline,” he said calmly.
The doctors were used to Regiment Commander Huo borrowing the phone.
Originally, if Regiment Commander Huo hadn’t caused a fuss, he could have been discharged these past couple of days.
But now, the leadership from the Northwest had issued an order: Regiment Commander Huo could only be discharged with his wife’s permission. Hence, he came to the office every day.
Huo Jingyuan dialed the number for the family compound.
Wen Yaozu lounged on the sofa and asked casually, “Who is it?”
Huo Jingyuan: “Me.”
Wen Yaozu laughed. “Brother-in-law, my sister isn’t back yet. When she gets back, I’ll definitely call the hospital first thing and have them notify you.”
Although Wen Yaozu hadn’t met his brother-in-law in person yet, they had already established a very friendly relationship over the past couple of days.
