Wen Ci’s eyelids drooped slightly. It seemed that the people who had abducted Xiao Chuan intended to sell him; otherwise, they wouldn’t have spent money to bring him to the hospital for treatment.
Wen Ci comforted him: “It’s okay. Even if they are here, I won’t let them take you away.”
When she was in the northwest, she had tested her own strength. This body, having done farm work since childhood, was in decent condition and could exert about fifty percent of her full strength.
At seven o’clock sharp.
Wen Ci, led by the chief physician, arrived on the third floor. The doctor walked ahead, speaking in a very soft voice: “Regiment Commander Huo is awake, but he’s on an oxygen tank. It’s best if he speaks less these days.”
“Understood.”
Huo Jingyuan’s ward was private and equipped with a bathroom.
Wen Ci entered the ward. The curtains around the bed were drawn, making it difficult to see the details of the surroundings. With a heavy heart, she walked in, her gaze sweeping toward the man on the bed.
Huo Jingyuan’s forehead and neck were wrapped in bandages.
Only his deep, ink-like eyes were moving, glancing around. The moment their eyes met, tears uncontrollably streamed down Wen Ci’s face.
Wen Ci had seen too many cruel scenes.
She thought her heart had grown cold.
But when she saw her beloved lying in the hospital bed, her heart ached.
Wen Ci stepped forward and took Huo Jingyuan’s rough hand in hers. His palm also bore the marks of wounds, but they had already scabbed over. The two of them simply gazed at each other in silence.
Huo Jingyuan raised his hand to wipe away the tears at the corner of Wen Ci’s eyes.
Suddenly, Huo Jingyuan noticed the little boy standing beside Wen Ci. He didn’t seem to be a child from the northwest family compound, and he looked quite soft and delicate.
The man’s dry throat managed to produce a sound: “Who is this?”
“Xiao Chuan is a child I picked up on the road yesterday.”
Xiao Chuan looked nervously at the uncle on the bed. He knew the uncle and the sister were married and was worried that the uncle might not like him.
Wen Ci wanted to talk more with Huo Jingyuan and explained Xiao Chuan’s background to him: “After we finish visiting you, Xue Li will come to the hospital to take us to the police station.”
“Alright,” Huo Jingyuan responded.
Half an hour was neither long nor short.
Wen Ci held the man’s hand, her clear and transparent eyes gazing at him. She leaned down and kissed his cheek, her voice sweet and soft: “By next week, I’ll be able to stay by your side every day.”
After speaking, Wen Ci took Xiao Chuan’s hand and left the ward.
Outside the building, the sky was beginning to lighten with the faint glow of dawn. Xue Li was chatting with someone in the courtyard. When he saw Wen Ci come out, he raised his hand and called, “Sister-in-law, over here.”
“How is Brother Huo?”
Wen Ci replied: “He can speak, but he still needs more rest.”
There was no police station near the hospital, so Xue Li drove them to the Beijing Central Police Station. Police officers in uniform were arriving for work one after another. “Sister-in-law, the captain of the Central Police Station is my cousin’s husband. He’s a trustworthy person.”
Wen Ci nodded: “What should I call him?”
“His surname is Su.”
As soon as they got out of the car, Officer Su walked up, smiling and patting Xue Li on the shoulder, teasing: “I heard you quietly brought a girlfriend back this time. So, when can we expect to drink your wedding wine?”
Hearing this, Wen Ci raised an eyebrow and joked: “I’m also looking forward to drinking your wedding wine.”
Xue Li’s handsome face turned red: “Sister-in-law, don’t tease me!”
Others didn’t know that he and Yu Qing were pretending, but Sister-in-law knew perfectly well. She was deliberately teasing him, just to make fun of him.
“And who is this?”
Xue Li became serious: “This is Wen Ci, the wife of my regiment commander, whom I mentioned to you last night. She’s also the daughter of Minister Jiang from Beijing.”
Mentioning Minister Jiang’s name was to ensure the police station would take this case seriously.
