Starting the next day, Sheng Zexi began his leave.
No training was required.
However, he knew there was still a task to handle today.
After breakfast, he went to find Zhao Weiguo.
Zhao Weiguo worked in logistics. When Sheng Zexi arrived, he was arranging some matters, planning to leave the island that day.
Seeing Sheng Zexi, Zhao Weiguo was very surprised.
Though the two knew each other, their relationship wasn’t particularly close.
Moreover, Sheng Zexi was usually busy with training, and Zhao Weiguo was occupied with logistics, so they rarely had time to meet.
Thus, Zhao Weiguo was taken aback by Sheng Zexi’s unexpected visit.
“What a rare sight! Did you come here specifically to see me today?” Zhao Weiguo teased.
“Yes, specifically to see you.”
Zhao Weiguo had meant it as a joke, but Sheng Zexi actually confirmed it—and with a very serious expression.
Zhao Weiguo: I really don’t want to be sought out by you. Whenever you come looking for me, it’s never good news.
After instructing his men to finish moving the supplies, Zhao Weiguo clapped his hands and walked with Sheng Zexi to a quiet spot, gesturing for him to sit down.
“Alright, what’s the matter?” Zhao Weiguo asked, eyeing Sheng Zexi.
“Actually, it’s not me who’s looking for you today—it’s my wife. But she’s about to give birth soon, so she can’t come herself.”
Sheng Zexi’s wife was none other than Dr. Gu.
Zhao Weiguo had a deep impression of this Dr. Gu.
After all, he could never forget that heavy rainstorm.
At the time, Zhao Weiguo had assumed such a beautiful young woman was merely relying on Sheng Zexi’s status.
He also thought her weather predictions were nothing but wild guesses.
But the facts proved that Gu Jianing was truly capable.
Not only had she accurately predicted the weather that day, but she was also an incredibly skilled doctor.
From then on, Zhao Weiguo never dared to underestimate Gu Jianing again.
So now, hearing that Dr. Gu was looking for him, his instincts told him this was no trivial matter.
“What does Dr. Gu want with me?”
“Could it be that I have some incurable disease, or is there another major weather problem?”
Those were the only two possibilities Zhao Weiguo could think of.
When he saw Sheng Zexi nod, Zhao Weiguo nearly blurted out, What the hell?!
“Wait, what exactly is it? Just tell me already.”
Sheng Zexi stopped beating around the bush. “My wife said a severe typhoon will hit Huansha Island the day after tomorrow!”
What?!
Zhao Weiguo shot to his feet.
“A severe typhoon?” He glanced at the clear, calm skies outside. “Regiment Commander Sheng, are you sure Dr. Gu isn’t joking?”
Sheng Zexi’s expression remained firm. “Do you think my wife and I would joke about something like this?”
Zhao Weiguo: Alright, fair point. The two of them do seem like serious people.
But—
“Regiment Commander Sheng, look at the weather right now. Do you really think a typhoon is coming? And a severe one at that?”
“Besides, I haven’t heard any news from the military meteorological department.”
Zhao Weiguo’s younger brother, Zhao Hongxing, worked in the military meteorological department—as a leader, no less.
Since Zhao Weiguo was in logistics and often had to go out to sea for supply runs, his brother would definitely inform him immediately if there were any major weather changes.
But recently, his brother hadn’t mentioned anything to him.
“Right now, our meteorological technology can only predict weather one or two days in advance. It’s normal not to detect anything for the day after tomorrow,” Sheng Zexi said.
“But I trust my wife’s judgment and experience.”
“Tell me, Weiguo—if a severe typhoon really hits Huansha Island without warning, what would happen?”
Sheng Zexi’s simple question made Zhao Weiguo’s expression darken, his face turning serious.
A severe typhoon would be absolutely devastating for Huansha Island.
Historical records showed that decades ago, the island had been struck by a powerful typhoon, and the destruction and casualties had been beyond description.
Even now, decades later, those who had lived through that disaster still spoke of it with lingering fear.
Though Zhao Weiguo hadn’t experienced it himself, he had heard the stories.
There was no doubt—a severe typhoon would be catastrophic for Huansha Island.
If they were prepared in advance, they might mitigate the damage. But if it struck without warning, the consequences would be unimaginable.
And if Gu Jianing’s prediction was accurate—if a severe typhoon really was coming the day after tomorrow—
Yet right now, they hadn’t received any official warnings.
The potential outcome was almost too terrible to consider.
Of course, Zhao Weiguo hoped Gu Jianing was wrong, that no typhoon would come.
But then he remembered how precise her prediction of the heavy rain had been.
Now that she had sent Sheng Zexi to deliver this warning, she must have strong confidence in her forecast.
There was a real possibility the typhoon was coming.
If he believed her, and the military took preventive measures, they might avert disaster.
But if they ignored the warning and the typhoon did strike…
The consequences would be dire.
Zhao Weiguo fell into deep thought, torn between doubt and fear.
After a long silence, he finally looked at Sheng Zexi and made his decision.
“Alright, I trust Dr. Gu—and I trust you.”
“Regiment Commander Sheng, what do you need me to do?”
Sheng Zexi wasn’t surprised by Zhao Weiguo’s choice.
In situations like this, even the slightest possibility was worth preparing for. It was far better to act than to ignore the warning and face the unthinkable.
“I heard your brother works in the military meteorological department.”
“We need to inform him, so he can report to the higher-ups. The military must deploy emergency preparations before the typhoon hits.”
“If the typhoon really arrives the day after tomorrow, we only have two days left. Time is running out,” Sheng Zexi said.
Zhao Weiguo nodded. “Understood. There’s no time to waste—I’ll go talk to my brother now. Do you want to come with me?”
Sheng Zexi agreed.
The two immediately headed to the military meteorological department.
“Brother? What brings you here?”
Soon, Sheng Zexi met Zhao Weiguo’s younger brother, Zhao Hongxing.
The two siblings looked very much alike, though Zhao Hongxing had a sharper, more astute demeanor.
Zhao Weiguo slung an arm around his brother’s shoulders. “Hongxing, come with me for a moment. There’s something I need to tell you.”
He gave Sheng Zexi a brief nod before leading his brother aside.
“Brother, what’s so important?” Zhao Hongxing asked once they stopped.
Zhao Weiguo hummed in acknowledgment but didn’t get straight to the point. Instead, he asked, “Hongxing, have you detected any unusual meteorological changes near Huansha Island recently?”
Zhao Hongxing shook his head. “No, nothing.”
“If there were any major weather shifts, I would’ve told you.”
“Are you sure? No signs of a typhoon? None at all?”
Zhao Hongxing frowned. “No. Brother, what’s going on? Why are you being so cryptic?”
