Who would have thought they’d be discovered now?
Chen Han’s face was full of excitement as he gripped Sheng Zexi’s shoulders. “Zexi, do you see this?”
“This time, including your kids and dogs, everyone has made a huge contribution!”
Not only had they captured that group of drug lords and dug up all those bombs, but they’d also found what those R-country people had hidden underwater before retreating. The value of these things was enormous.
This time, they were definitely going to be recognized for their merits.
Of course, Chen Han hadn’t forgotten that it was Xingxing, Yueyue, and their dogs who had first discovered those people.
And as for the things underwater—Leiting had sniffed them out. Leiting’s contribution was undeniable.
Sheng Zexi was also excited, but after glancing at the sky, he said, “Leader, it’s getting late. Should we head back to the military base?”
“Alright, let’s go back.”
Sheng Zexi wondered if Ningning was still waiting for him at home. He needed to return early so she wouldn’t worry.
So Chen Han, Sheng Zexi, and the others took the captured group and carried the boxes back to the military base.
By then, it was already past midnight.
The tall, thin man and his companions waited past midnight, but not a single explosion was heard. They immediately realized their plan had failed.
In other words, every single bomb they’d planted on Huansha Island had been dug up.
This shocked them and left them in disbelief.
They had buried so many bombs on Huansha Island—even the three of them didn’t know the exact number. Back then, they had buried them separately. Even if they were to search for them now, they likely wouldn’t find them all.
Yet, the military had managed to uncover every single one.
Who had done it?
Was it some capable person in the military? Or was it the military dogs?
Whoever it was, their skills were terrifyingly impressive.
And one more thing…
The tall, thin man lowered his eyes, replaying in his mind the moment he had stabbed the little boy.
He had clearly aimed for the boy’s heart.
He had definitely stabbed down.
So why was the boy completely unharmed?
It was as if his dagger had hit some kind of barrier.
Was there something strange about that boy, or was there something wrong with him?
He couldn’t figure it out!
Meanwhile, Chen Han and Sheng Zexi led the way back in a car, while their comrades followed behind, carrying the items and escorting the captured drug lords.
But just as they got out of the car and entered the military base, they saw bright lights ahead and several people standing there.
Sheng Zexi narrowed his eyes. One of them was Lin Chushi, who had tried to stop him that afternoon.
Beside Lin Chushi was another man, around sixty years old, with similar facial features. Sheng Zexi had a vague guess about his identity.
On the other side stood another man in his fifties, with a square face and sharp features. But when his gaze landed on Sheng Zexi, there was a hint of warmth in his expression.
“Commander Lu, Deputy Commander Lin…”
Chen Han recognized them and saluted first.
Sheng Zexi followed with a salute, confirming the identities of the men before him.
Commander Lu was naturally his father’s old friend and the highest-ranking leader in their military district.
As for Lin Chushi—there was no need to explain.
The older man standing beside Lin Chushi was his father, the second-in-command of Huansha Island.
Truth be told, at his age, Lin’s father should have retired long ago.
But around the time he was supposed to step down, he pulled some strings, claiming that his position was still needed and that he was physically capable of continuing his duties.
According to national regulations, such individuals could delay their retirement.
And that was exactly what Lin’s father did—delaying his retirement until now.
In reality, despite being in his sixties, the man looked quite youthful, almost indistinguishable in age from his son, Lin Chushi.
But it was obvious that Lin’s father was the scheming type.
Though a faint smile lingered at the corners of his lips, Sheng Zexi detected no warmth in it—only calculation.
So, what were these people doing here in the middle of the night?
Aside from Commander Lu, Sheng Zexi doubted the Lin father-son duo had anything good in mind.
And clearly, they were waiting for them.
As it turned out, Sheng Zexi’s guess was right.
The moment he finished saluting, Lin Chushi immediately launched into an attack.
“Chen Han, Sheng Zexi, do you realize your mistake in misusing military resources?!” Lin Chushi glared at them, his tone full of reprimand.
Chen Han wasn’t stupid—he knew Lin Chushi was targeting him and Sheng Zexi.
That was why they had waited here in the dead of night.
Frowning, Chen Han replied, “Misusing military resources? I’m not sure I understand.”
Lin Chushi: “You—!”
“Now, now, Chushi, no need to rush. Take your time explaining the situation to Commander Lu.” Lin’s father chuckled, though his smile didn’t reach his eyes.
So, Lin Chushi immediately accused Chen Han and Sheng Zexi of abusing military power by deploying forces to rescue Sheng Zexi’s child.
At the end, he added, “I objected this afternoon, yet Chen Han and Sheng Zexi still mobilized so many troops just to save that kid. I wonder who gave them the audacity.”
Of course, Lin Chushi knew exactly who had authorized it.
But right now, he was feigning ignorance—because he wanted to…
“It was me.”
Sure enough, the moment Lin Chushi finished speaking, Commander Lu spoke up.
He didn’t hide it. After all, a simple investigation would reveal the truth, so there was no point in denying it.
At this, Lin’s father chimed in, “Oh, so it was you, Commander Lu? Well… forget it, then. Let’s just issue a warning to Sheng Zexi and Chen Han—no repeat offenses.”
“No!” Lin Chushi insisted stubbornly. “No matter who they are or how high their rank, anyone who violates military regulations must be punished!”
By now, Chen Han and Sheng Zexi could see right through their act.
Lin Chushi and his father were playing good cop, bad cop—one pretending to be lenient while the other pushed for punishment.
Their real target wasn’t just them—it was Commander Lu.
After all, he was the one who had approved their operation.
They had heard rumors before that Lin’s father was jealous of Commander Lu’s position.
Now, it seemed those rumors were true.
Lin’s father then turned to Commander Lu. “Commander Lu, what do you think?”
Commander Lu glanced at him but didn’t respond immediately.
Instead, he looked at Chen Han and Sheng Zexi. “Report on the mission.”
Lin’s father and Lin Chushi frowned.
Commander Lu didn’t seem the least bit worried.
Did he really trust Sheng Zexi that much?
Or…
Had he already received some inside information?
That couldn’t be possible.
“Yes, sir!” Chen Han saluted and began his report.
He started from the beginning—how Xingxing and Yueyue, along with their dogs, had detected something unusual.
All the way to how they arrived just in time to rescue Xingxing and capture the drug cartel.
