Zhang Qiumei stared at the stack of certificates in front of her and froze in place.
Her eyes were filled with disbelief.
Peking University, Tsinghua University… So many prestigious Universities she had dreamed of attending but failed to get into. Yet this country woman had certificates from these top universities—and not just undergraduate degrees, but doctoral diplomas!
Not only was she a graduate, but she was also a professor in medicine recognized by the state?!
“No, that’s impossible. These can’t be real,” Zhang Qiumei refused to believe it.
Niu Cui didn’t want to believe it either. “Right, these must be fake. They have to be fake.”
Gu Jianing raised an eyebrow. “Fake? If they were fake, would I dare to show them? Wouldn’t I be afraid of being exposed? The authenticity of these certificates can be verified with just a phone call to the universities.”
“Besides, forging academic credentials and impersonating state-awarded honors is illegal. I don’t have the hobby of breaking the law.”
Gu Jianing thought to herself that the certificates she had received from these universities after going to Beijing to design exam papers were actually quite useful.
Using them to slap the face of her husband’s unwanted admirer felt incredibly satisfying!
Just then, a voice sounded from outside.
“Excuse me, is this Professor Gu Jianing’s home?” Gu Jianing looked up and saw two men standing at the door.
After she nodded, the two middle-aged men walked in. When they saw Gu Jianing, their eyes filled with respect.
“Hello, you must be Professor Gu Jianing. I’m Dr. Zhang Chunhe from the county hospital, and this is Dr. Yu Ming. The hospital has finalized your position—you’ll be our deputy director. If you have no objections, you can start work tomorrow.”
“What? Deputy director?!” Niu Cui exclaimed from the side.
She immediately pointed at the two men and said to Gu Jianing, “You must have paid these people to act, right? They’re fake, aren’t they? If you can really become the deputy director of the county hospital, I’ll eat sh*t!”
Before Gu Jianing could respond, the onlookers outside chimed in.
“Niu Cui, you’re really going to have to eat sh*t then. These two really are Dr. Zhang and Dr. Yu from the county hospital. I took my son there before, and Dr. Zhang treated him.”
“Yeah, when I went to the county hospital, it was Dr. Yu who treated me.”
The crowd vouched for the two doctors’ identities one after another.
Although Dr. Zhang Chunhe had just arrived, he quickly realized that these two women seemed to be here to cause trouble for Professor Gu.
That wouldn’t do. Professor Gu was the hospital’s treasure—they couldn’t let her be bullied.
“You’re saying what I said is fake?”
Zhang Chunhe scoffed and took out a letter of appointment.
“This is the official appointment letter stamped by the hospital director. It’s all written clearly—you can take a look.”
“Unless you think this is fake too?”
Niu Cui was illiterate, so she couldn’t read it, but Zhang Qiumei could. She immediately saw that it was exactly as the man had said.
Zhang Qiumei’s mind was in chaos, her thoughts jumbled.
Meanwhile, the military wives watching finally reacted.
“Before, I was worried that Commander Sheng’s wife would compete with us for jobs, but now…”
“Who would’ve thought Commander Sheng’s wife is so amazing? A Ph.D., a medical professor, and a deputy director? Incredible, truly incredible!”
At this moment, Gu Jianing’s status in their minds soared to an unimaginable height.
She was someone they revered!
“Compete for jobs?” Zhang Chunhe raised an eyebrow at the comment.
Could it be that these people, seeing Professor Gu hasn’t been working lately, assume she has no background and is just idling around?
Zhang Chunhe laughed and explained, “Professor Gu was already a renowned doctor when she was stationed in the Northwest Military Region.”
“Now that her husband has been transferred to Huansha Island, she has also been reassigned to our county hospital.”
“The reason Professor Gu hasn’t reported to the county hospital yet is that, for the past two months, she was invited to Beijing to participate in setting the national college entrance exam questions. She only returned recently.”
“Originally, we had prepared a department head position for Professor Gu, but we felt it still didn’t match her capabilities. So, after discussions with the entire hospital, we decided to appoint her as our deputy director.”
As soon as Zhang Chunhe finished speaking, it was like another thunderbolt, shocking everyone present.
“Oh my god! No wonder she seemed to have arrived earlier but then disappeared. Turns out she was invited to Beijing to help set the college entrance exam papers!”
“The mother-daughter pair, Niu Cui and Zhang Qiumei, are truly ridiculous.”
“Zhang Qiumei was so proud of being a prospective college student, but she didn’t realize that Commander Sheng’s wife is already a professor.”
“Zhang Qiumei has to take the college entrance exam, while Professor Gu is the one setting the questions!”
“Professor Gu is so impressive, yet Zhang Qiumei still had the audacity to try and break up her marriage. Shameless, utterly shameless!”
The mocking comments, spoken without restraint, reached Zhang Qiumei’s ears loud and clear.
At that moment, Zhang Qiumei felt as though those taunts were like slaps striking her face repeatedly, making her cheeks burn with humiliation.
She wished she could vanish into a hole right then and there.
This was beyond embarrassing.
“Ahhh! How dare you spout such nonsense! I’ll tear your mouths shut!” Niu Cui exploded in rage upon hearing those insults directed at her daughter.
Gu Jianing, supporting her waist, stepped forward and looked at Niu Cui and Zhang Qiumei.
“Commander Sheng and I are legally married. Ours is a military marriage, protected by law.”
“By coming here to provoke me like this—”
“Are you trying to sabotage a military marriage? Do you want to go to jail?”
Her words, though spoken lightly, froze Niu Cui and Zhang Qiumei in place with fear.
Zhang Jianjun, who had just arrived, overheard this and immediately sensed trouble.
“Sister-in-law, this is all a misunderstanding! My mother and sister are just ignorant and came here recklessly. Please, be magnanimous and don’t take it to heart.”
Niu Cui, seeing her most accomplished son arrive, instantly regained her confidence.
“Jianjun, Jianjun! Quick, talk to her! Your sister just likes Commander Sheng—how does that warrant jail time?”
“Jianjun, she’s lying, right? Tell me she’s lying!”
Zhang Qiumei also looked at her brother with pleading eyes.
Gu Jianing rested a hand on her waist and studied the man before her. So this was Zhang Jianjun?
The same man who had been embroiled in scandal with his second wife, Chun Xing?
Gu Jianing vaguely remembered that Niu Cui, his mother, had complained about Chun Xing’s inability to conceive.
And Zhang Jianjun’s first wife hadn’t borne him any children either, right?
A suspicion began forming in her mind.
Without hesitation, she activated the scanner installed in her eyes and began scanning Zhang Jianjun…
