Almost every day, he would come to the Traditional Chinese Medicine department, seizing every spare moment to teach Gu Jianing everything he knew.
Gu Jianing, of course, was more than happy to learn.
However, the most important part of her job was still treating patients.
Today, for instance, there were more patients than usual seeking her consultation, leaving her with little time for study.
Just as she finished examining one patient, a sudden commotion erupted outside.
At that moment, Dr. Zhou rushed in, his face filled with panic.
“Dr. Zhou, is something wrong?” Gu Jianing asked.
“Dr. Gu, Elder Chen needs to see you urgently. Come with me.”
“Ah, but I’m in the middle of consultations,” Gu Jianing frowned, sensing something off about Dr. Zhou’s behavior.
Her mentor would usually come find her directly if he needed her—why would he send Dr. Zhou instead?
“Dr. Gu, there’s no time to explain. Just come with me—it’s an emergency!”
With that, Dr. Zhou reached out to grab Gu Jianing’s arm—albeit through her sleeve.
Gu Jianing found Dr. Zhou’s behavior extremely odd. He wasn’t usually like this, nor would he ever grab her like this, even if it was just her clothing.
But just as she was about to follow him, curious to see what he was up to—
“Dr. Gu is over there!”
Someone shouted loudly.
Were they calling her?
Gu Jianing turned and saw a group of people storming toward her.
Frowning, she wondered—what was going on?
Beside her, Dr. Zhou paled, muttering under his breath, “It’s over, it’s over…”
[Warning! Warning! Host an individual with malice levels exceeding 90% has been detected!]
Huh?
Someone else had malice toward her exceeding 90%?
She remembered that the last time someone in the military base had such high malice toward her, it was Li Shuyao.
But Li Shuyao wasn’t even in the base right now.
Could it be someone else?
Thanks to the detector’s warning and marking, Gu Jianing quickly spotted the person highlighted in the crowd.
It was a woman around thirty years old, still wearing a white lab coat.
A doctor?
After a brief moment of thought, and thanks to her now-photographic memory, she recalled who this person was.
Wasn’t this Lu Yanli, a doctor from the internal medicine department?
“Make way, quick!” someone suddenly shouted from the crowd.
Immediately, the crowd parted to create a path.
Gu Jianing saw people carrying a stretcher, covered with a white cloth. Beneath it, there seemed to be a person?
Wasn’t this something only done when someone had died?
Had someone really died?
At that moment, Gu Jianing also noticed someone beside the stretcher—none other than Liu Xiwang, whom she had met just a few days ago.
Right now, Liu Xiwang’s eyes were red, tears streaming down his face as he stared at the stretcher, his gaze filled with grief.
Wait… could the person on the stretcher be…?
“It’s her! This woman is the one who killed Aunt Liu!”
“Quack doctor! Quack doctor!”
“She must pay with her life!”
Everyone in the hospital was drawn to the scene.
And Gu Jianing found herself surrounded.
Beside her, Dr. Zhou was on the verge of tears. “It’s over, it’s over… How do we inform Elder Chen? I hope he gets here soon.”
“Dr. Zhou, what exactly is going on?” Gu Jianing clearly sensed that these people were targeting her.
Though she had some suspicions, she still didn’t fully understand the situation.
Dr. Zhou opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, Lu Yanli stepped forward first.
“Dr. Gu, you killed my aunt. Don’t you have anything to say for yourself?”
Gu Jianing frowned. “I killed your aunt? I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
Lu Yanli’s face was filled with sorrow. “Dr. Gu, are you still going to deny it?”
“My aunt was your patient. She died after taking your medicine!”
Gu Jianing: “Your aunt? You mean Aunt Liu? Is that her on the stretcher? She’s dead? That’s impossible!”
Gu Jianing refused to believe it.
Wasn’t Aunt Liu’s illness almost cured?
How could she have died?
She stepped forward, about to lift the white cloth covering the stretcher.
But Lu Yanli blocked her way. “My aunt died because of you, and you still refuse to admit it? Just because you’re Elder Chen’s disciple, do you think you can do whatever you want?”
“No, that can’t be. Elder Chen must have been deceived by you too.”
“Move aside!” Gu Jianing frowned.
This Lu Yanli—though she appeared grief-stricken, there wasn’t a trace of sorrow in her eyes.
It disgusted Gu Jianing, especially after the malice detector had just sounded an alarm.
She suspected this was a scheme against her.
But right now, the priority was confirming Aunt Liu’s condition.
Had she really died?
Gu Jianing pushed Lu Yanli aside and approached the stretcher.
Liu Xiwang stared at Gu Jianing with red-rimmed eyes, then glanced at her belly, his gaze filled with sorrow. “Dr. Gu… my mother… she’s dead…” he choked out.
Gu Jianing pressed her lips together and lifted the white cloth—only to see the face beneath.
It was unmistakably Aunt Liu’s.
Gu Jianing’s pupils contracted sharply.
“This can’t be!”
Just yesterday, the woman had come for a follow-up, received her medicine, and even undergone a scan—her recovery had been progressing rapidly.
And yet now, Aunt Liu lay lifeless on the stretcher.
“What do you mean, ‘can’t be’? It’s all because of you! You don’t know how to treat illnesses, yet you prescribed medicine recklessly and killed my aunt! Give her back to me!” Lu Yanli shouted furiously.
Her eyes flicked toward an older woman in the crowd, who immediately stepped forward and tried to shove Gu Jianing.
Given that Gu Jianing was four months pregnant—with twins—a fall could have devastating consequences.
“What are you doing?!” Fortunately, Dr. Zhou noticed in time and shielded Gu Jianing, grabbing the woman’s arm.
“Let go! This quack killed Shufen! Shufen and I were close—I’m just demanding justice for her!” the woman snapped, trying to wrench free.
But Dr. Zhou seemed to see through her intentions and held on tightly.
Just then, someone shouted, “Elder Chen is here!”
“Elder Chen, please stand up for Sister Liu!”
“Elder Chen, you’ve been deceived by Gu Jianing! She’s a fraud—she killed Aunt Liu with her treatment!”
Gu Jianing wanted to check Aunt Liu’s condition, but they kept blocking her from getting closer.
But it didn’t matter—Gu Jianing had previously linked Aunt Liu to her system, allowing her to monitor the woman’s vital signs in real time.
She could still check.
So, she immediately focused her mind and opened the “Bound Patients” section in her space. Soon, she saw Aunt Liu’s current status…
Meanwhile, Elder Chen had been notified that his only disciple had allegedly killed a patient through malpractice, and the victim’s family was now causing an uproar at the hospital. Though he didn’t believe it, he rushed over immediately.
When he saw the chaotic crowd and the motionless elderly woman on the stretcher, a realization struck him.
A conspiracy—this was absolutely a conspiracy.
He firmly believed that Gu Jianing could not have killed anyone with her treatment.
This was clearly a scheme against her. But how could he resolve it?
“Gu Jianing, you must pay with your life for my aunt’s death!” Lu Yanli shouted again.
Her words incited the crowd, and soon, others joined in, chanting, “Pay with your life! Pay with your life!”
Just as Elder Chen was about to speak, Gu Jianing—her belly prominent with pregnancy—stepped forward with a stern expression and declared:
“I won’t pay with my life… because Aunt Liu isn’t dead at all!”
