1980s: Sickly Educated Youth Raising Cubs in the Countryside Chapter 329: Confession

Song Wei: “Anyway, even if there was a chance, I wouldn’t go back. My situation is different from Zhao Yuyin’s—the place I came from was even more terrifying than wartime.”

At least during wartime, there were food supplies. In her world, both plants and animals carried lethal radiation.

To survive, people had no choice but to scavenge for food with lower radiation levels.

But the chances of finding such food were slim each day. Moreover, prolonged consumption of irradiated food shortened lifespans, caused painful black spots to appear on the skin, and led to agonizing bone and organ pain in later years, often driving people to suicide.

“Have you ever seen wheat and rice grains as small as soybeans? Those crops grew abnormally, but out of an entire field of over ten acres of wheat or rice, less than one in a hundred million was edible.”

“The sun in the sky was toxic. If exposed for too long, the body’s functions would deteriorate.”

“If you couldn’t find food for a day, the only option was barely palatable nutrient fluid. Some couldn’t even afford that.”

“Every day, people died for various reasons—from radiation sickness, killed by mutated beasts while gathering outside, or murdered by their fellow humans. Most were killed for simple reasons, often just for food.”

“Even then, the food wasn’t plentiful. Just a day’s worth of food could make someone a target for murder.”

Lin Zhen was deeply shaken. How could such a world exist?

He couldn’t even begin to imagine it.

Just from Song Wei’s calm description, he could sense the sheer danger of that world.

Song Wei added, “Back then, the global population was less than 30% of what it is now.”

“So even if I had the chance, I would never return to that world where I struggled every day and still couldn’t eat my fill.”

Lin Zhen suddenly stood up and hugged her. “You won’t go back. You’ll never have to go back to a place like that.”

No wonder her skills were so exceptional. In such a dangerous environment, even an ordinary person would likely develop remarkable survival skills.

Song Wei hugged him back. “That’s why I’m so grateful fate brought me to this world. To Zhao Yuyin, this might be a fictional world from a novel, but to me, it’s real, and it’s heaven.”

She wasn’t afraid to reveal her origins, only keeping her special ability a secret.

Her previous world was broken beyond repair—no one would want to go there, and it held no research value.

She also possessed no rare treasures. The only unusual thing about her was her superhuman strength.

Song Wei was grateful her ability was just enhanced strength.

If she could manipulate elements like others, she would have to avoid using it entirely to stay unnoticed.

If Lin Zhen couldn’t accept her origins, she wouldn’t force herself to stay with him.

Song Wei was clear-headed: when it came to love versus safety and sustenance, she would choose the latter.

She gently pushed away from his embrace. “So now that you know where I come from, do you still insist on marrying me?”

As she spoke, she watched his eyes closely, ready to detect any hesitation or evasion.

Fortunately, Lin Zhen’s gaze was unwavering.

“Of course.”

“As long as I’m sure you’re not a spy and won’t harm our country’s harmony, it doesn’t matter where you come from—I will choose to marry you.”

“Comrade Song Wei, please trust me too. I will never let a third person know what you’ve told me today. I want to spend the rest of my life with you!”

Lin Zhen spoke as solemnly as if he were reciting a Party pledge, his expression and tone utterly earnest.

In this era, feelings were often pure. Once someone made up their mind, as long as they could live together peacefully without drama, they would stay together for a lifetime.

Song Wei placed her hand into his broad, outstretched palm.

“Comrade Lin Zhen, I look forward to your guidance in the future.”

Their eyes met, both filled with warmth and laughter.

Song Wei rose onto her tiptoes and kissed his thin lips. This time, Lin Zhen’s ears turned red as he lowered his head and deepened the kiss.

After revealing her origins, Song Wei and Lin Zhen’s relationship grew even more natural and intimate.

Everyone in the educated youth courtyard could practically see the pink bubbles floating around them.

“Why do I feel like those two are getting more and more inseparable? It’s making me envious—I kinda want to find someone too.”

It wasn’t like they were doing anything overly intimate.

It was just little things: Lin Zhen tying Song Wei’s hair back while she brushed her teeth, or constantly serving her favorite dishes during meals while urging her to eat more so she wouldn’t go hungry.

As if she wasn’t already eating enough—her appetite was bigger than two of theirs combined!

Yet Lin Zhen’s eyes genuinely reflected concern, as if he truly believed she needed to eat more.

“You’re thinking about finding someone here? Aren’t you afraid your mom will give you an earful when you go back?” Gao Le teased, holding the little dog Mingming.

Zhao Su retorted, “Got a problem with that?”

Gao Le shrugged. “Not me, but do you even have anyone in mind?”

Well, not really.

“Did you talk to them about yesterday’s matter?” Song Wei asked Lin Zhen after their meal, referring to the issue with Zhao Yuyin.

“I did.”

Lin Zhen had spoken with the two undercover special police officers posing as educated youths. However, he only mentioned that he’d accidentally overheard Zhao Yuyin also searching for the royal tomb.

As for how Zhao Yuyin knew about it, he claimed ignorance.

Even if Zhao Yuyin were captured later and revealed her identity as a transmigrator, it would have nothing to do with him. How the higher-ups handled her was their business.

His only task was to ensure Zhao Yuyin never learned about Song Wei’s origins.

“Let’s go into the mountains today to collect the honey,” Song Wei suggested, her eyes gleaming with anticipation for the cliff honey.

“Don’t rush. I asked Aunt Xinghua to sew us some protective netting suits.”

“Should we also inform the uncles from the brigade leader’s family? We can go together to collect the honey. There’s so much of it on the cliffs—we can just take what we need and leave enough for the bees to survive the winter.”

“Good idea. The brigade leader has harvested wild honey before. He’ll know how much to leave without harming the bees.”

Action followed decision. They first checked on the progress of their house.

Many hands make light work, and with Lin Zhen and Song Wei being generous with food, everyone worked efficiently with full stomachs.

Several walls had already been built.

Song Wei brought a bucket of mung bean soup, generously sweetened with sugar, making it deliciously refreshing.

The workers drank bowl after bowl, their mouths sweetened and their heat cooled, earning the couple even higher praise.

“Don’t you worry about this house—leave it to us! We guarantee it’ll last seventy or eighty years without any problems!”

Lin Zhen nodded. “Uncle, if you need anything else, just let me know. We’ll be on our way now.”

“Sure thing, go ahead.”

After leaving the construction site, they headed to the brigade leader’s house. It was mealtime, and the family warmly invited them to join.

“Thank you, Grandpa, but we’ve already eaten. We’re here to discuss something.”

Lin Zhen explained that Song Wei had discovered a large patch of wild cliff honey and asked, “Would your family like to come and collect some?”
