After hearing what they said, Song Wei felt quite regretful that she hadn’t been there to witness the drama firsthand.
Liu Linlin had put it very mildly—it was far more than just a fight; it had nearly cost someone their life. In his desperation to leave this place, Luo Yecheng truly dared to do anything.
As it turned out, in order to become a worker-peasant-soldier university student, Luo Yecheng not only deliberately caused the death of his own daughter to gain sympathy but also nearly killed the selected candidate after he failed to be chosen.
The unfortunate victim was a relatively quiet yet capable educated youth from their neducated youth point. This young man was something of a pushover—though reserved, he always stepped up when needed. Thus, the villagers had a favorable rather impression of him.
During the recommendation process, to ensure fairness—and also because the two worker-peasant-soldier university slots allocated to Ping’an Brigade were partly due to Song Wei’s influence—things were handled with extra care.
Yes, it was because of the article she had published, which caught the attention of higher-ups after appearing in the newspaper. After Song Wei and Lin Zhen left, some leaders even specially visited Ping’an Brigade to see the dog team. In the end, Ping’an Brigade received praise and was granted two worker-peasant-soldier university slots.
So, one of these slots was inevitably going to an educated youth. While the village’s slot caused all sorts of commotion due to fierce competition, the educated youth slot also stirred up quite a bit of trouble because of Luo Yecheng.
For some reason, Luo Yecheng thought that if he played the victim card, many people would support and recommend him. But in reality, no one liked him.
Driven by jealousy and resentment, he eventually took advantage of a mushroom-foraging trip to the mountains to attack that educated youth. He nearly bludgeoned the young man to death with a rock. Fortunately, someone passing by discovered them in time.
Luo Yecheng was arrested, and in his deranged state, he revealed that the premature daughter he had with Wang Xiaohua had also been killed by him.
“He must have lost his mind,” someone remarked.
The others nodded in agreement. “Absolutely.”
The educated youth was truly unlucky—his injuries were so severe that he had to be hospitalized and was unable to go to university. In the end, the slot oddly ended up going to Su Fang.
“Today, we were seeing off Comrade Su Fang and another comrade who received a worker-peasant-soldier university recommendation to the city to catch the train. That’s why we missed you,” they explained.
So Su Fang had left. Song Wei wasn’t surprised.
Su Fang had a resilient personality. After freeing herself from her ex-husband’s parasitic family, she was willing to endure any hardship, no matter how exhausting or difficult. Perhaps it was precisely because everyone knew how much she had suffered that they ultimately voted for her.
By comparison, after weeding out those with poor character, the relationships within the educated youth lodge were quite harmonious. Liu Linlin and Li Juan, for instance, didn’t compete for the slot.
Liu Linlin said frankly, “If this had happened in the past, I would have fought for the slot too.”
“But now,” she added lightheartedly, “I’m counting on this year’s off-season vegetables to make a splash.”
Jokes aside, she simply felt that life in the countryside wasn’t so unbearable anymore.
Except for being a bit tired during the busy farming seasons.
Her academic performance had never been particularly strong. Although she was from the city, her family favored boys over girls, so she only made it through junior high before her education ended. University felt like a distant dream to her.
Besides, Ping’an Brigade was doing much better now. This year, they even had watermelons to sell, and the educated youth would share in the benefits too.
The tractor arrived at Ping’an Brigade.
Everyone was thrilled to see Lin Zhen and Song Wei back, greeting them with great enthusiasm.
“Educated Youth Song, young Lin Zhen, you’re back!”
“The watermelons are ready to be picked. If you hadn’t come back soon, there’d be none left for you to eat!”
A batch of watermelons had already been harvested.
The ones grown on the sandy plot were exceptionally good—big and sweet.
They were selling like hotcakes this summer.
Song Wei was already thinking about picking one to eat as soon as she got back when Little Heidan, Xie Ping’an, heard the news and came running.
He ran so fast that one of his shoes flew off, followed closely by two wolves.
“Sister Song! Brother!”
Little Heidan’s eyes shone brightly as he completely ignored his older brother standing right there and threw himself into Song Wei’s arms.
“Sister Song, I missed you so much! Super, super much!”
He’d thought about them every single day.
Song Wei picked him up without hesitation.
“Let’s go home.”
The five wolf pups circled Wolf One and Wolf Two curiously, letting out soft, young and tender howls.
Wolf One and Wolf Two looked disdainful—what were these little things?
The wolf pups followed them home like little tails.
When they pushed the door open, a fawning red fox greeted them.
“Ying ying ying~~~”
Song Wei: “…You still haven’t left?”
Why was this guy still here? And… it seemed to be well on its way to becoming a gas cylinder.
Such a chubby fox—did it not care about its looks anymore?
Little Heidan: “It went back to the woods after you left, but it came back on its own after less than three days! It even steals food from Wolf One and Wolf Two!”
Song Wei: So it’s gotten addicted to mooching.
This fox has no shame.
After returning home, Little Heidan buzzed around them nonstop.
“Sister Song, look! I cleaned the room every day. I even cleaned your room at the educated youth lodge!”
Song Wei patted his head. “Little Heidan is amazing.”
“Hehe, and also, I did my homework seriously every day…”
Little Heidan seemed to have an endless stream of things to say.
After the excitement died down, Lin Zhen took all the luggage to the room to organize it. Little Heidan clung to Song Wei’s neck, tears rolling down his cheeks.
The little guy had his pride—he didn’t cry out loud.
“I missed you so much. Why were you gone for so long?”
Even though no one in the Lin family bullied him anymore, and he had plenty to eat and wear, he still missed living with Sister Song and big brother.
Song Wei gently rubbed his head to comfort him.
“We were held up a bit there, but we brought gifts for you.”
Little Heidan’s emotions shifted quickly—he perked up immediately at the mention of gifts.
Especially when he saw them.
“Are these really wolf teeth?!”
So many of them, and they were even strung into a necklace!
