But now, this pride had been humiliated at someone else’s house.
“Hello, Auntie, I’m Song Wei,” Song Wei greeted Lin Fei enthusiastically.
Lin Fei also warmly welcomed them into her home.
During their visit, Lin Fei’s sister-in-law occasionally made snide, sarcastic remarks, and Lin Fei’s mother-in-law sat with an air of superiority, openly looking down on them.
“Xiao Fei, think carefully about what I said. No family lets their daughters continue studying. It’s useless anyway. Our Yan family only has my son Guolin as a male heir. In the future, he’ll be responsible for taking care of our parents. Once he finishes his studies, you can safely hand over your job to him. It’ll also bring honor to the Yan family,” Lin Fei’s sister-in-law suggested.
Song Wei was stunned.
How thick-skinned must someone be to say something so utterly shameless?
Lin Fei’s face darkened. She had initially planned to keep the conversation civil since Lin Zhen and his partner had come to visit. However, she found it impossible to hold back when faced with such audacity.
“Mom, I have guests. If there’s something to discuss, let’s talk about it another day. You and Sister-in-law should head back now,” Lin Fei said, her tone cold.
Her sister-in-law immediately retorted, “We’ll leave, but Guolin should stay here. Your house is closer to the school. It’s such a waste for those two girls to have a room each. Just tidy up one of the rooms for Guolin to stay in.”
Lin Fei took a deep breath. “No way!”
The old woman slammed the table. “This is my son’s house! Why can’t his nephew stay here for a while? Guolin is going to carry on the Yan family line. You should treat him as if he were your own son!”
Lin Zhen clenched his fists, ready to speak, but Song Wei pressed his hand to stop him.
As a grown man, it wasn’t appropriate for him to argue with these two women.
“Auntie, you should let him stay. After all, he is your nephew,” Song Wei said with a smile.
Lin Fei was stunned and looked at her. Her sister-in-law and mother-in-law, on the other hand, wore smug expressions.
“This relative of yours is sensible,” they said.
Still smiling, Song Wei continued, “Auntie, since you’re going to treat him like your own son, you’ll need to follow through. They say boys should be raised strictly while girls are pampered. As your ‘son,’ he should handle all the household chores—cooking, cleaning, laundry, and so on. After all, boys should learn responsibility through hard work.”
She added, “And don’t forget to keep a thin stick handy. When he misbehaves, make sure to punish him thoroughly. The old saying goes, ‘Spare the rod, spoil the child.’ A stick that stings but doesn’t harm will ensure he grows up into a fine man. Only children disciplined properly avoid becoming ungrateful.”
As Song Wei spoke, Lin Fei’s sister-in-law and mother-in-law turned pale.
The young man, who had been lounging confidently as though he were about to inherit a city apartment without lifting a finger, suddenly straightened up, his eyes wide with fear as he looked at Song Wei.
Lin Fei, on the other hand, smiled.
“You… What are you saying, you…” the sister-in-law began angrily.
Lin Zhen cut her off with a fierce glare. “When my fiancée speaks, you stay quiet.”
The sister-in-law fell silent, intimidated by his commanding presence.
Song Wei gently held Lin Fei’s hand. “Auntie, I think your nephew has some rebellious tendencies. Since you’ll be raising him as your own son, don’t hold back. Discipline him strictly if he refuses to listen.
“Also, make sure to check his homework thoroughly. For every mistake, he should be punished. And if you catch him associating with bad influences, beat him without hesitation. Only then will he grow into a responsible adult.
“If he dares to resist, no problem. Just let me know. Lin Zhen and I visit the city often and can come by bike. We’ll help you deal with him.”
Then she asked Lin Fei if she had any sturdy wood available.
Lin Fei, amused, fetched a log as thick as an arm. Though unsure what Song Wei intended, she thoroughly enjoyed the horrified expressions on her sister-in-law and mother-in-law’s faces.
Holding the log, Song Wei snapped it cleanly in two with her delicate hands. Smiling warmly, she said, “See? I may look frail, but I’m quite strong. Helping Auntie discipline a child is no problem. If I hit too hard and send him to the hospital, don’t worry—I’ll cover the medical expenses.”
“You… you…” the old woman stammered, trembling with rage.
The boy screamed, “Mom, I don’t want to stay here! Let’s go!”
Terrified, he ran out.
The sister-in-law hurried after him. “Guolin, wait for me!”
As they left, Lin Fei laughed so hard she nearly cried. Her daughter chimed in cheerfully, “Granny, Aunt, don’t worry! We’ll treat Brother Guolin like our own brother.
“Brother Guolin, you’ll buy us snacks, help us with homework, and protect us in fights!”
“Granny, Aunt, you’re so generous! Sending Brother Guolin to help with cooking and laundry—it’s the best gift ever!”
Lin Fei joined in, “Don’t worry. I’ll treat Guolin like my own son!”
“Mom! Grandma! Let’s go! I don’t want to stay here!” the boy shrieked as he ran, his mother and grandmother trailing behind him.
“Guolin, Guolin, wait for your mom!”
The old lady from the Nian family was so enraged that she could barely stand upright. Seeing her unsteady state, Song Wei quickly said,
“Granny Yan, are you feeling unwell? Quick, let’s take you to the hospital. How could we let you fall ill at my aunt’s house?”
The old lady shot Song Wei a fierce glare before hurrying out after them.
