When the other educated youths returned one after another, they were introduced to Song Wei’s brother.
Seeing a man in uniform with good looks, everyone greeted him politely.
Xu Laidi, however, was overly enthusiastic.
“Comrade Song, would you like to join me for a meal? I’m quite a good cook…”
She even changed into a different outfit. It was a pity the weather was cold—otherwise, she would have worn her favorite floral dress to show off.
Her enthusiasm was so obvious that Gao Le and Zhao Su, recalling some unpleasant incidents from before, immediately distanced themselves from her.
Song Jing remained expressionless. “No need, I’ve already eaten.”
Xu Laidi smiled warmly, feigning modesty. “Even if you’ve eaten, you can still have a little more.”
Not only Song Jing but even Song Wei felt her scalp tingling from Xu Laidi’s exaggeratedly coquettish behavior.
Song Jing replied flatly, “I have something to do. I’ll take my leave.”
Without waiting for a response, he turned and left. He had only come to see what kind of people lived in the educated youth dormitory with his sister, but Xu Laidi’s behavior had genuinely startled him.
His sister was right—he needed to be cautious and should absolutely avoid going out alone.
Xu Laidi tried to follow him, but Song Wei pulled a burning stick from the stove and pointed it at her.
“Xu Laidi, everyone knows what you’re up to. Stop eyeing my brother, or I won’t let you off easy.”
Xu Laidi stepped back a couple of paces, unconvinced by Song Wei’s words.
“Your brother isn’t you, so why do you have to interfere in everything? You’re just a girl who’s going to get married off one day, so why meddle in your brother’s life? What’s wrong with me? I’m hardworking, thrifty, and beautiful to boot!”
The other educated youths: …
Are you serious right now?
Even Song Wei was left speechless for a moment.
Liu Linlin rolled her eyes dramatically. “Do yourself a favor and look in the mirror—or better yet, fetch a basin of water. You’re practically like one of those old village aunties. Standing next to Comrade Song, someone might mistake you for his mom.
“And stop slapping labels on yourself like ‘hardworking and thrifty.’ What you really are is stingy and shameless. If you can’t use words properly, don’t try to show off your ‘education.’ It’s embarrassing.”
Liu Linlin had a sharp tongue and rarely lost in verbal spats.
Song Wei crossed her arms and nodded. “Exactly what I wanted to say. Let me make it clear: my brother has no interest in you. Save yourself some dignity and stop pestering him.”
To outsiders, Song Wei might have seemed like a villain in this scenario, but she didn’t care. Some things needed to be said bluntly; otherwise, Xu Laidi would pretend not to understand and keep pushing boundaries.
Not that Song Wei thought her brother needed to marry a goddess, but Xu Laidi’s character and behavior were truly beyond the pale.
Xu Laidi stomped her foot, pointing at Song Wei’s retreating figure. “What does she mean by that?!”
However, no one around spoke up for her.
Xu Laidi had truly outdone herself this time.
“Xu Laidi, don’t get mad. While Song Wei’s words were harsh, she wasn’t entirely wrong,” Bai Yunjiao said sweetly.
Xu Laidi thought she’d finally found an ally, but then Bai Yunjiao continued in her soft, cutting tone.
“And Liu Linlin made a fair point, too. Standing next to Comrade Song, you do look like you’re from a different generation. It’s no wonder; all that time working in the fields and not eating properly must have taken a toll. You look so haggard now.”
Her sly remarks made Xu Laidi’s face twist with anger, but there was nothing she could say.
She felt everyone was targeting her again!
Still, Xu Laidi always had a mysterious confidence in herself. She kept hanging around near Song Wei’s room, looking for excuses to approach Song Jing.
One day, she brought him two boiled eggs.
“Comrade Song, I cooked these eggs for you to replenish your body.”
Heidan immediately jumped out, spreading his little arms protectively in front of Song Jing and glaring at Xu Laidi.
“Brother Song doesn’t need them. We have plenty of eggs!”
Even the two little wolf pups joined in, mimicking Heidan’s fierce stance. Their baby growls were meant to be intimidating but came off as adorably harmless.
Xu Laidi glared at the children. “What are you little brats interfering for? Get lost.”
“You’re the one who should leave!” Heidan retorted, puffing out his chest. “Sister Song will be out soon, and she’ll deal with you if you don’t stop.”
Song Wei’s beating was quite painful. Although Xu Laidi was scared, she did not leave and even complained to Song Jing.
“Comrade Song, your sister is so unruly. She’s always hitting people—nearly everyone in the dormitory has been struck by her at some point. Girls shouldn’t act like that; no future in-laws would ever accept such behavior. I’m nothing like that. I…”
Before she could finish, Song Jing’s face turned icy.
“Xu Laidi, you’d better watch your words. My sister’s behavior is none of your business. If she’s ever raised her hand against someone, it’s because they deserved it.”
He was fiercely protective of his sister and had no patience for someone bad-mouthing her right in front of him.
Xu Laidi, flustered, tried to explain. “That’s not what I meant…”
But before she could say more, Song Wei appeared with a damp rag, throwing it right in Xu Laidi’s face before launching into a full-on scolding.
“You really don’t listen, do you? Xu Laidi, are you so desperate for a man that you’ll throw yourself at anyone with a bit of money and decent looks? Have some self-respect!”
Beaten and humiliated, Xu Laidi fled to her room, screaming.
Song Wei kicked her door hard, making it rattle. “Try pestering my brother again, and I’ll throw all your belongings out!”
Song Jing stood there, a bit stunned.
Is my sister… always this fierce?
But he found himself oddly pleased. A fierce sister was less likely to be bullied.
Besides, for once, his sister had been protecting him. That thought made him smile as he chopped firewood with renewed vigor.
“Brother, if Xu Laidi bothers you again, don’t engage. Just call me—I’ll handle it.”
Song Jing smiled. “Alright.”
He glanced at Heidan. “Heidan is pretty good, too.”
Despite being Lin Zhen’s brother, Heidan had earned Song Jing’s approval for his loyalty to Song Wei.
Later that evening, Song Jing headed to Lin Zhen’s house, as there was no place for him to sleep at the educated youth dormitory.
Watching him leave with Heidan in tow, Xu Laidi grew even angrier.
This won’t do, she thought. I need a plan. I can’t let such an excellent man slip through my fingers.
I don’t know why but I like Xu Laidi😂😂😂😂
