Gu Jianing froze, stunned. Thinking back on the past few months with Sheng Zexi, she gave a bitter smile. Of course—living under the same roof, and with Sheng Zexi being a soldier—how could he possibly not have noticed anything?
In fact, there had been several times before when she had nearly exposed herself, and she could sense Sheng Zexi was holding back from saying something.
Back then, she had assumed he just didn’t know. But now, she realized—he knew. He simply chose not to say it out loud.
Maybe he understood she wasn’t ready to tell him. So even if he suspected something, he still chose to look the other way and never asked.
It wasn’t until she voluntarily brought out the universal hemostatic bandages that he finally broke the silence.
“Ningning, I don’t intend to question you, and I don’t want to dig into it. I just need to know you’re by my side.”
“As for whatever makes you special—tell me whenever you feel ready.”
“But whether you tell me or not, it doesn’t change the fact that I have a duty to protect you. Ningning, don’t forget—you’re the woman I personally asked to marry.”
“I want us to be together for a lifetime. I want you to be safe and well.”
“So anything that might expose you—don’t ever show it again. Not even to me, if you can avoid it.”
“Ningning, I know your intentions are good. But human nature can be greedy. No matter what, your safety is my first priority.”
His words made Gu Jianing’s eyes well with tears. She couldn’t help but throw herself into his arms. “Brother Xi… how can you be so good to me?”
“But I can’t just stand by and do nothing when I know you and your comrades could be seriously injured—or even killed. If I have the ability to help but choose not to, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself.”
Sheng Zexi frowned slightly, thinking for a moment. “You said during this mission, I and my comrades might be seriously injured… or worse?”
“Yes.” Gu Jianing answered without hesitation.
After a pause, he asked, “Did you see this through that special ability of yours?”
“Yes.” She answered again, without the slightest doubt.
“Tell me exactly what you saw.”
“Okay.”
Then Gu Jianing described everything she had seen in her flash of the future.
As Sheng Zexi listened, his fists clenched tightly.
He understood what it meant—if what Ningning said was true, then she had seen events that hadn’t even happened yet.
And if this ability of hers were to be discovered—what kind of danger would she face? There might even be more secrets she hadn’t revealed yet.
Sheng Zexi’s expression turned grim.
In that moment, he swore to himself: no matter what, he would do everything in his power to protect this secret. He couldn’t begin to imagine the consequences if it ever got out.
He even had a fleeting thought—should he leave the military, take Ningning, and disappear? But he knew that wasn’t the real solution.
He forced himself to calm down.
He needed to start by analyzing what Ningning had told him she saw.
In her vision, he would be seriously injured, and several of his comrades would die.
Why?
Was the mission leaked? Was there a betrayal?
He didn’t know the reason yet—but what he did know for sure was this: he would not let his brothers die. That was the one thing he was absolutely certain of.
To Sheng Zexi, the comrades he had fought beside for years were sometimes even more important than so-called family.
These comrades were all men who risked their lives to protect the country—and behind each of them was a family.
Every time they went on a mission, Sheng Zexi had only two wishes: complete the task successfully, and bring back the same number of men who went out.
Gu Jianing held his hand tightly. “Brother Xi, promise me—take these bandages with you. As long as you’re careful, they won’t get exposed. I trust you.”
“And it’s just a precaution. The best outcome is that you won’t even need them.”
Sheng Zexi was silent for a long time before he finally chose to take the bandages.
He pulled Gu Jianing into his arms. “Ningning, on behalf of my comrades—thank you.”
Gu Jianing shook her head. “They’re not just your comrades, they’re warriors defending the country. The peace we live in today is thanks to all of you. If I already know what’s coming, how could I turn a blind eye?”
She knew there was a risk of exposing herself, but she still made the choice.
She couldn’t just sit back while knowing she had the power to save real lives—and choose to do nothing just to protect herself.
That wasn’t who she was.
Sheng Zexi hugged her tighter. This, he thought, this is Ningning’s kindness.
Others said she was spoiled or pampered, but Sheng Zexi knew—she had the softest, kindest heart.
“Ningning, don’t worry. I’ll be careful. I’ll do everything I can to avoid exposure. I hope the worst doesn’t happen. But if it does—then they’ll have to step over my dead body first.”
Gu Jianing immediately covered his mouth, her beautiful eyes full of reproach. “Don’t say things like that.”
Sheng Zexi fell silent—but he meant every word.
He would protect his wife the woman he loved, even with his life.
Later, Gu Jianing asked him how he had realized there was something different about her.
Sheng Zexi listed a few moments—like her odd expression during the New Year’s Eve performance, or the time she returned from the Qin family’s house and looked off standing at their doorstep. Other times included when she was asleep, or when she sat quietly with her eyes closed during car rides, and strange things that had appeared in the house.
That’s when Gu Jianing realized she had unintentionally exposed herself many times. Sheng Zexi had been observant enough to catch them all.
The things he described were either moments when she had entered her secret space to study, or when she had seen glimpses of the future.
Only now did Gu Jianing truly grasp what kind of terrifying intuition and skill it took to become one of the military’s elite.
Thankfully, that man was her husband—and he loved her dearly.
But… what if that love didn’t last?
Her experiences from her past life suddenly filled her with worry again.
> [System Message]
Host, there’s no need to worry. The childbirth system has a detection and defense mechanism. If the male owner’s love becomes impure or he has a change of heart, all knowledge of the system and your secrets will be erased from his memory.
Gu Jianing: Wait—seriously?
Now, she could finally relax.
“Oh, right—Ningning, earlier you said you were almost certain that Li Shuyao was behind hiring the trafficker. Was that something you knew through your ability too?” Sheng Zexi asked, remembering the previous incident.
“Yeah, I’m about 80 to 90 percent sure. And…” Gu Jianing paused, then said in a low voice, “I can say with 100% certainty that Li Shuyao has killed someone. An innocent person. And she has a deep, dangerous hatred toward me.”
As soon as she said it, Sheng Zexi’s expression turned cold and serious.
“I believe you. I’ll have someone keep a close eye on Li Shuyao.”
